900 kms drive across Europe, in one day;

We were initially a little skeptical about driving 900 Kms from Rome (Italy) to our home in Saint Legier (Switzerland). At the same time, we did not want to break journey for one day, as the process of locating a hotel, checking in, unpacking, finding food and then checking out the next day, can be arduous.

The longest that I have ever driven in one day is about 600 km in India when I drove our Toyota Innova from Batseri (Himachal Pradesh, near the China border at Chitkul), break at Theog for lunch, another break at Chandigarh and back to Gurgaon, where we lived. It was a long and tiring journey.

We started early in the morning and reached home late at night.

Driving in Europe is obviously very different from India as there can be no slow moving traffic on motorways, pedestrians are banned and there are no stray animals roaming about. The infrastructure in Europe is also better, but that does not mean that one can be any less alert as the traffic movement can be heavy. Trucks and cars move at very high speeds and even the slightest mistake can result in a mishap. One also needs to be careful about speed limits and driving rules, as everybody expects you to follow them.

We started our journey at about 9 am from Rome and were home at about 8 pm. We lost about two hours due to a crash frustratingly close to our home in Switzerland, that slowed down traffic considerably. There were three breaks on the way, to what turned out to be an experience we will remember.

Geneva's famous Jet d'Eau

I have been to Geneva several times, mostly for work. There have been occasions that I did not have any time to explore the city. Luckily, during this visit, my meeting got over earlier than anticipated, so I had a bit of time before heading back home (Saint Legier, Switzerland, about an hour's train ride from Geneva).

As is usually the case, I always like to explore a new place on foot, in order to observe and absorb the sights and sounds closely.

In this Vlog (the first of two parts), I visit the statue of Mahatma Gandhi which is located in the diplomatic area, viewed the United Nations building, followed by a refreshing walk through the Botanical Gardens of Geneva, that reminded me of Nehru Park and Lodhi Gardens in New Delhi that I frequented as a kid.

My love for parks is courtesy my parents who love to spend their time in greenery, walking, exercising and just conversing.

I then decided to walk along Lake Geneva upto the famous Fountain of Geneva, locally called in French as the jet d'eau (or simply water jet), that rises over 140 meters and is a major landmark of the city. The walk itself was pleasant and I passed several runners, office goers and school children enjoying their lunch, lake view and beautiful weather.

I took a ferry service to the other side of the Lake (that cost 2 Swiss Francs) that passed close to the Fountain just to observe and shoot the water jet.

Train ride on a snowy day in Switzerland 🇨🇭 😉

It has started to snow early this year in Switzerland. When we arrived in 2019-2020, the first snowfall happened only in March, effectively ruining the ski season for many. In 2020-21, the first snowfall happened in January. This season, 2021-22, there has already been heavy snowfall in November. The ski season has already started.

This little train journey from Saint Legier, where we live, to , is a glimpse of life on a snowy day, in . Watch the world's best infrastructure, known for safety and clockwork, deliver.
