MERTEN KAATZ | WAJANG DISKOTHEQUE

Port of Spain- and Hamburg–based Merten Kaatz is DJ and Archive Activist and co-founder of the Wajang Diskotheque collective—responsible for an ever-evolving series of events that have brought buried Afro-Caribbean music heritage to sweaty dance floors across the globe, bridging the gap between a diasporic musical past and the immediacy of a packed nightclub.

In 2017, alongside Trinidadian writer Attillah Springer and Scottish artist Peter Doig, he launched Wajang Diskotheque in a hidden Belmont courtyard in Port of Spain. What began as an underground club night has since become a touring “Afro-global Boomsiefication,” unearthing Soca, Latin, Soul, Cumbia, Calypso, Funk, Compas, Zouk, Reggae, Gwoka and other grooves from the tropical region, recontextualized for contemporary dance-floor sensibilities.

Outside the DJ booth, he is the founder of the highly acclaimed reissue label Cree Records and curates a weekly two-hour radio show on ROVR Live—spotlighting exclusive edits and unreleased tracks from under-heard archives—and has recently begun collaborating with London’s Soundway Records to apply his archival expertise to new reissue projects.N
