Defining subcultures is difficult, especially when, like the English skinhead culture, they defy
definition and do not wish to be pigeonholed 👊 .

THIS IS SKINHEAD by Tom Wilkins Tom Wilkins | UK Photographer does not even attempt to do so, but instead leaves it to the
viewer of his fantastic photographs to form their own impression of the essence of skinhead culture.

His photos explore contemporary skinhead culture through identity, loyalty, brotherhood, music,
style 🥾 and belonging.

Shot across Wales and the wider UK 🇬🇧 , the project began with Wilkins approaching the culture as
an outsider. Over time it evolved into a collaborative portrait of the people and communities he met,
blending his documentary photography with contributed images, personal stories✍ , and memories from within the culture.

THIS IS SKINHEAD looks past familiar imagery and stereotypes to explore the friendships 🫶 ,
contradictions, histories, and sense of belonging that still exist within the culture today.

With a foreword by Katie Owen and contributions from photographer and SKINS author Gavin Watson musician Jenny Woo Oi , Justin “Mooch” DeLoretto, and skinheads from Britain and around the world.

They were spied on by friends 👀 and even members of their own families; they were expelled from schools and fired from jobs; they were beaten by police and imprisoned. Instead of conforming, the punks fought back 🥊, playing an indispensable role in the underground movements that helped bring down the Berlin Wall 🧱.

WANTED is the fantastic 🎉 debut photo book by the award-winning big-wave 🌊 surf photographer Romuald Pliquet.

It’s a striking portrait series celebrating the surfers of his home turf, the Crozon Peninsula 🇫🇷.

The title takes direct aim at an outdated stereotype that’s clung to surfing since the 1970s: the image of a countercultural crowd lounging aimlessly on the beach all day 🦥. This book sets the record straight. Today’s surfing community spans every social class and generation — doctors, artists, teachers, fishermen, students — all united by the same passion and a deep connection to the ocean 🦈. It’s become a real social hub, where differences melt away with the rhythm of the tides.

Yet beach access has increasingly been restricted 🚫 in recent years, often out of a lack of understanding about how diverse and locally rooted this community truly is. WANTED pushes back against these tired clichés, capturing a multifaceted community 🤝 that’s genuinely woven into the local landscape and deeply respectful of it.

The 🆕 issue of Waves & Woods Magazin has arrived and has a treasure trove of photos and stories in store for surfers, van enthusiasts 🚐 and nature lovers.

Issue 47 takes you to some seriously different corners of the world 🌎. First stop: Ericeira 🇪🇷, where pro surfer Marlon Lipke shares his favorite spots, the best coffee, the ideal time to visit, and whether Ericeira could actually be a place to move to 🤔

It hikes 36 kilometers through the Hajar Mountains in Ras al Khaimah 🇴🇲, explores summertime Arosa, and sits down with big wave surfer Andrew „Cotty“ Cotton to talk about the world’s biggest waves, fear, and how Nazaré became what it is today.

Then it heads to a place that’s been sitting on plenty of bucket lists for a long time: São Tomé and Príncipe 🇸🇹. Rainforest, black volcanic cliffs, waterfalls, and an island nation still largely uncharted for most. Leve leve, as the locals say — take it easy. Slowly, slowly 🐌. Maybe the perfect motto for this issue.

„Tyler Hatzikian, the real deal” said filmmaker Jason Baffa back in 1993 after watching the big goofyfoot destroy a solid South Bay left on a ’60s style longboard with a soulful style unlike anything Baffa had ever seen. He then went on to feature Tyler in two seminal surf classics “Singlefin: Yellow” and “One California Day”.

Multi-talented Laure Mayer grew up in the Basque Country, has surfed around the world and now lives mainly in Australia. Byron Bay naturally!

In the winter in southwest West Australia it all has to come together for the frothers out there to find anything worthwhile, and even then the surfability window might last less than 24 hours.

Some amazing photos taken by Mike Ito from the water a la Don James of seemingly diminutive Emi Erickson riding a 10’6” gun at massive Waimea. Emi’s the daughter of Roger Erickson, himself a Waimea master, and her board was shaped specifically for this wave and carried two distinctive black stripes as tribute to her dad.
