Today the 2016 in Physics was awarded to David J Thouless, F Duncan M Haldane and J. Michael Kosterlitz. It is in relation to their research on topological phases of matter, and topological phase transitions. These phases manifest on the surfaces of materials, such materials pose exciting possibilities for future technologies.

In 1980 a quantum hall effect experiment found that, in high magnetic fields, the hall conductivity was exactly quantised. The stability of these integer steps was unexpected, it wasn't until much later that it could be explained by the analogy of topological invariance.

A Facebook post isn't the best format to explain topology, and topological invariance, so I'll refer you to an excellent clip of Prof. Thors Hans Hansson: https://youtu.be/9qpoBG5hy-A?t=4m52s

The 2016 in Physiology or Medicine is awarded to Yoshinori Ohsumi for studies on Autophagy: the process of self-degradation and recycling of cells. The failure of this process can produce tumour cells and has been linked to Alzheimer's disease. An understanding of this mechanism hence provides an understanding of such diseases.

Have you heard that Mercury is transiting by the Sun today?
Mercury can currently be seen as a small silhouette moving in front of the Sun. The solar telescope at Queen Mary University of London is live streaming here: https://youtu.be/KVs3svLDCQY

Remember, never look at the sun without a proper solar filter. Besides, why risk damaging your eyes when you can watch it all from the safety of your web browser!

The transit of Mercury on 9th May 2016 streamed live from the Queen Mary University of London Observatory in East London.
