Mykonos. More than a destination.
From the air, Mykonos looks exactly like an island in the heart of the Cyclades should: rock, sea, light and wind. And flying here gives you something you simply can’t experience from the ground — the Aegean stretching endlessly beneath you, islands appearing one after another, reminding you just how small we are in the middle of this landscape.
Today, Mykonos is synonymous with luxury, nightlife and freedom. But the island’s story goes much deeper. It lies at the heart of the Cyclades, an archipelago named for the circular arrangement of its islands around the sacred island of Delos.
Just a few kilometres from Mykonos lies Delos, one of the most important religious and commercial centres of ancient Greece, and, according to mythology, the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis.
That’s what I like about Mykonos: behind the clubs, yachts, windmills and whitewashed houses, there are centuries of history, navigation, trade and mythology.
And perhaps that’s why the experience starts before you even land.
A new take-off.

Mykonos. Mai mult decât o destinație.
Din avion, Mykonos arată exact așa cm trebuie să arate o insulă din inima Cicladelor: stâncă, mare, lumină și vânt. Iar zborul până aici are un avantaj pe care nu-l ai de la sol — vezi Marea Egee în toată întinderea ei, insulele care apar una câte una și înțelegi cât de mic e omul în mijlocul acestui peisaj.
Mykonos este astăzi sinonim cu luxul, nightlife-ul și libertatea. Dar povestea insulei este mult mai veche. Se află în centrul Cicladelor, iar numele arhipelagului vine de la forma circulară în care insulele sunt așezate în jurul insulei sacre Delos.
La doar câțiva kilometri de Mykonos se află Delos, unul dintre cele mai importante centre religioase și comerciale ale Greciei antice, considerat în mitologie locul nașterii lui Apollo și Artemis.
Asta e partea care îmi place la Mykonos: în spatele cluburilor, al iahturilor, al morilor de vânt și al caselor albe există secole de istorie, navigație, comerț și mitologie.
Și poate că de aceea experiența începe încă din avion.
