It’s not too late to dig up and store your dahlias. A little snow on top is just fine. Dig them up, let them cure for a couple days and then get them in your storage bins with vermiculite for their winter sleep.

I thank the garden gods every day for not making peonies invasive. I would give up. No one could ever rip out a peony. They are the Cadillac of the flower world. The Lamborghini. The Ferrari.

Be careful from who you seek gardening advice. The advice from 30 years ago may no longer be good advice (and it could be ILLEGAL). Local governments are pretty good about updating their lists of invasive species but best to double check with your local conservation authority and/master gardener group.

Don’t toss the leaves. With the exception of a few (black walnut, oak) mulched leaves make EXCELLENT compost. Either create leaf mold or toss them in with grass clippings and leftover potting soil and make top notch organic compost. It is SO easy and it’s way better than the stuff you buy at the garden center. TRY IT.

There are so many ways to expand your plant collection with your existing plants. You can take a hard or softwood cutting and root it in potting soil. You could try layering like we did with the hydrangeas or you could let one of your stems go to seed and then place it in a part of the garden where you want it to grow.

You will see lots and lots of macrophylla hydrangeas for sale during the lead up to Easter weekend. These are primarily grown for indoor use and don’t always transplant well if you move them outdoors. Macrophylla hydrangeas are also notoriously tricky to grow in colder climates as they bloom on old wood and the winter often zaps their buds. I JUST DON’T WANT YOU TO GET YOUR HOPES UP!

This is a warning to all you people who hardscaped their entire front and backyards OR covered with with a monoculture lawn.
