If you remember loading up an mp3 player with 16mb worth of files (around 4 songs) or filling up the iPods then whopping 5GB (around 1,000 songs), it was all made possible by a dedicated team of researchers in Germany: MP3, the file extension that revolutionised the music industry, is 30! 🥳🎂

The audio codec that led to the rise of the iPod & Napster was created by a team at Germany’s Fraunhofer IIS in Erlangen and named mp3 in July 1995 following an internal email poll.

The team had succeeded in their goal of playing back mp3 files on small, portable devices and in the subsequent years mp3 players became ubiquitous among music fans of all ages.

The Fraunhofer Society generated hundreds of millions of euros in licensing revenue over the patent’s lifetime and was able to use the proceeds to expand its team in Erlangen, growing it into the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s largest institute, and continue its work on audio codecs.

Today, the groundwork laid by mp3 remains part of our daily lives: one of the format’s many descendants – the xHE-AAC codec – is used by billions of people every month when they stream podcasts, films or music.

The first song saved to mp3 was Suzanne Vega's Tom’s Diner – an NYC diner that would serve as the exterior for Monk’s Café in the influential sitcom Seinfeld.
