Smoking a cigarette on a childhood canyon’s edge, I asked God for a sign I’m doing everything correctly. Give up. Everything. Staring at the brightest moon in recent memory, a childhood friend appears from the dumpster.

I give him my warm and dry hoodie to keep. I grab all the edible food in my refrigerator and come back to feed him. I light another cigarette as he opened up about the evils the world has hijacked his ability to be the being he knows he is deep down beyond the broken human that just Oscar the grouched me in the we small hours of the morning, when Tierrasanta is fast asleep.

This man found the same peace I found in silence. That allowed him to find clothes, food, drink and my love and attention to provide the space for him to recollect his divinity.

He found himself for ten minutes. Said what he needed to do to pull himself out of this dumpster. It happened as I was passively killing my myself with each unnecessary inhale of a smoke that no longer serves me. An American Spirit that no longer needs to be explored.

Happy San Diego Day. If you didn’t know it that was today, it’s because you’re a transplant. You are the reason cost of living is so high. You are the reason the Rockets, Clippers and Chargers left. You are the reason most San Diego natives leave our home. Why is it San Diego Day you ask? Ask me again, instead of looking at the date and figuring it out for yourself.
