When a former science teacher, Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), wakes up on a spaceship with amnesia, he is forced to team up with an endearing alien to save the world. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and adapted from Andy Weir’s sci-fi bestseller of the same name, “Project Hail Mary” was shot by cinematographer Greig Fraser ACS, ASC, who approached ARRI Rental during the lead-up to the project for assistance in developing a specific visual style.
Selecting the ALEXA 65 as his main camera, Fraser wanted a solution for shooting vertical-squeeze anamorphic in the 65 mm format, utilizing the entire ALEXA 65 sensor to fill the taller IMAX image area by “squeezing in” to create additional height. The outcome of the collaboration was a completely new, custom set of anamorphic lenses that could be mounted sideways on the ALEXA 65, resulting in vertical flare, unique bokeh, and maximum image quality. 👨🚀🚀
In cinemas and IMAX now.
