About us

Fehras Publishing Practices is a publishing house and space established in Berlin in 2015. It was founded as a response to mounting questions concerning the history and the presence of publishing in the Eastern Mediterranean, North Africa and the diaspora. The mission of Fehras is to research the issue of »publishing« as a subject matter through observing and

experimenting with its forms. Fehras works on publishing projects in which alternative forms are tested, attempting to extend this term and create a new culture of critical engagement.

Woking materials and subject matters

The research focus of Fehras is based on the interrelation between cultures and publishing, which includes different fields of languages, archives and arts. Fehras deals with publishing as a process of generating, transferring and observing cultural knowledge and experiences. Moreover, the publishing house focuses on the transformation of a publication by placing it in different spatial and temporal contexts. Hence, the publishing house understands publication not only as printed or recorded material, but also as an expanded possibility in which readings, performances, seminars, lectures, encounters and exhibitions may act as forms of publishing. Therefore, publishing can be read as a curatorial and performative practice not only in the manner in which materials are chosen but also in the way they are released. The projects, publications and activities of Fehras Publishing Practices focus on archival materials (such as journalistic, radio, television, cinema and digital archives), books and magazines, libraries and readings, sound materials, publishing practices within the field of performance and visual arts and the shifting of cultural language in the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa. The publishing house seeks collaborations with publishers, authors, artists, curators, scholars and institutions. It attempts to create an artistic and scientific environment for publishing research and practice.

Program and Publishing issues

Through individual and cooperative projects, Fehras Publishing Practices works on creating new possibilities for the interrelation between culture and publishing. This research will appear within a long-term program through a series comprised of different forms of publishing such as print, audio, encounters and exhibitions. These diverse series will deal with various materials and topics

This series observes the process of the shifting of knowledge and the displacement of libraries and books as well as their disappearances and transformation due to social, political and economical changes in the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa. Series Of Institutional Terms
This series focuses on the published cultural language of the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa and the shifting of its terms and vocabulary as well as its relation to the displacement of intellectuals, the appearance of new cultural and artistic fields and institutions as well as their link to the global art and culture sphere. Series Of Listenings
This series observes sound publications in their spoken, chanted, broadcasted and recorded forms. Therefore, it deals with materials such as radio interviews, phonetic texts and poems, sound in cinema and lost audio archives. Atlas
Fehras Publishing Practices collects, preserves and studies photography in relation to books, reading and publishing culture. It aims to create a visual archive that can be used as a resource for research in the fields of reading customs, the relation between the reader and the book and publishing environments that include private, public and street libraries. Fehras observes the appearance of books in television and cinema as well as studying the layout of printed publications such as magazines, books, covers, vinyl records and tapes. Furthermore, Fehras Publishing Practices is interested in publishing and translating works by authors, artists and institutions in the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa.

Excerpts of the statement by artists and members of lumbung community
September 10th, 2022

We have tried our best to stay above the chaos, hostility, racism and censorship that have engulfed this edition of documenta. We have tried our best to stay focused and committed to our work and the promises and hopes of the lumbung. We have been resilient and in solidarity with our communities, friends, supporters, hosts and guests.
(…)
For months we have continuously faced smearing attacks, humiliations, vandalism, and threats in major media outlets, as well as in the streets and in our spaces. What is even scarier is the normalized dismissal of these actions. We have detailed these experiences in our previous statements and this has been completely ignored by the Supervisory Board of Documenta gGmbH.
(…)
We know what it means to be discriminated against due to color, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality, origin, caste, and/or disability. We understand the ways that our different anti-colonial struggles intersect. And that these struggles are faced in everyday life in society at large. We are committed to art’s role in resisting these broader societal injustices. And in the context of documenta fifteen and the specificities of the German context we see that the targeting of Palestinian artists is the point at which our anti-colonial struggles meet, and have become a focal point for attack. Anti-Muslim, anti-Palestinian racism, anti-queer, transphobia, anti-Roma, abelism, casteism, anti-black, xenophobia and other forms of racisms are racisms that the German society must deal with in addition to anti-Semitism.

Fehras Publishing Practices presents in documenta fifteen the second issue of Borrowed Faces, a photo novel on publishing culture in Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa during the Cold War.

The second narrative of Borrowed Faces focuses on the feminist women behind the Afro-Asian Solidarity Movement (launched with Bandung Conference 1955 in Indonesia). The story also observes the counter-project, the American CIA-funded organization Congress for Cultural Freedom, and its intervention in cultural production and its operations to monitor the Solidarity Movement activities. It historical and invented cultural figures from Palestine, Syria, Iraq and Egypt who interact with each other and support the spirit of the Afro-Asian Solidarity Movement.

Borrowed Faces is an ongoing artistic research examines publishing culture in the region of the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa during the Cold War era, focusing on the interrelation between politics, funding, and cultural production. Central to the work is the globalization of culture in the EMNA region in the early 1960s, among others as a consequence of the cultural policies pursued by both the bipolar power, the United States, and the former Soviet Union.

You can visit the installation at venue Hafenstr. 76.
