Drawing on recent exhibitions, artworks and films – as well as responses to them – McLaughlin explores the flattening effect this moral turn has had on cultural output, and the limitations it has placed on the way art is produced, presented and discussed.

In arguing against the dominance of morality in art, she opens the door to a more expansive understanding of difference, and the value of creativity, in 21st-century art making.

Should art be governed by political ideals?

Join us on July 23 at ICA London for the UK launch of Against Morality by East Sussex-based writer Rosanna McLaughlin: an incisive critique of the ways a homogenous set of liberal political values came to dominate contemporary art over the past decade.

McLaughlin will be in conversation with cultural critics Dean Kissick and Rebecca Liu . Reserve your tickets now via the link in bio.

Join Marie-France Rafael this weekend at Haus am Waldsee for a reading from her book “Passing Images: Art in the Post-Digital Age” (Floating Opera Press, 2022), presented as part of the program How to Move and Respond.

How to Move and Respond is an invitation to artists and writers to read/present their texts in the garden of Haus am Waldsee. The exhibition unfolds on two levels: on the one hand, the texts or text-based works are read/presented in the form of readings, performances, audio files, or screenings. On the other hand what is written about, or the artists who are described, or the artworks that are discussed (but are not visible).

Another great article from one of our authors! 💫

Here, Rosanna McLaughlin critiques the rise of celebrity figures like Brian Eno, Rick Rubin, and Alain de Botton as self-proclaimed art gurus, arguing that their oversimplified, self-help-driven books reduce the complexity of art to palatable soundbites. She suggests that works such as Eno’s What Art Does and Rubin’s The Creative Act fail to engage with the deeper intellectual traditions of art, offering shallow insights aimed at mass appeal rather than fostering meaningful engagement with the art.

McLaughlin is the author of “Against Morality,” our most recent addition to the Critic’s Essay Series, where she explores the fraught relationship between art and moral ideals. Copies are available to order soon!

This Wednesday in New York!

Can we redefine our futures by redefining our forms? How might the act of reading together itself be transformative?

Join the Department of Transformation on Wednesday, April 2, from 6–8 PM at The Clemente for the second monthly meeting of “Transforming Texts”, their experimental reading group. This month, they’ll gather to connect, talk, eat, move, and explore the pairing of “Imperfect Solidarities” (2024) by Aruna D’Souza and “The Arab Apocalypse” (1989) by Etel Adnan, in a session co-facilitated by Talia Shiroma and Prem Krishnamurthy.

RSVP at the link in bio!

Copies of Aruna’s book have recently been spotted at McNally Jackson in SoHo, so swing by to grab yours before the event!
