Hey... Has this moment come again? As 2025 comes to a close, I’ve taken a moment to look back – not to evaluate, but to say THANK YOU.

This year, my work as a interpreter took me across the west and east of Germany and beyond, to many charming cities. It led me into booths with colleagues I truly enjoyed working with, and into spaces where language quietly but decisively mattered: ceremonies, celebrations and international conferences.

Many of these projects allowed me to witness touching and difficult moments, learn new things (also about me!), and do what I really believe in—making real communication possible.

Alongside my interpreting work, I’m grateful that 2025 also gave me the opportunity to give back: contributing as a volunteer to the ( ) and , and to continue learning through CPD.

I’m thankful for each and every assignment, conversation, collaboration and lesson this year has brought.

Here’s to a peaceful and joyful Christmas season and to a prosperous, healthy and inspiring New Year ahead, dear Friends!

Since October, I’ve officially been a full member of the International Association of Conference Interpreters – a milestone I’m genuinely proud of and grateful for.

A few weeks ago, a welcome kit arrived. The one which carries symbolic weight for me: it represents belonging to a global professional community that actively safeguards , and standards in conference interpreting worldwide.

This membership didn’t happen overnight – not even within a single year. It was a journey that sharpened my skills, and ultimately allowed me to go the extra mile and level up as an interpreter. I’m grateful for the learning, the trust, and the people who accompanied me along the way.

A special thank you to my sponsors – you know who you are. Your support meant more than you may realise.

I’m also happy to contribute as a volunteer in the field of technology within the German AIIC region, supporting the association in its commitment to the interpreting standards.

I’m glad to continue walking this path – with curiosity, responsibility and dedication.

Last week’s conference reminded me of something I often reflect on when I'm in a contemplative mood: in the world of meetings, complex , and high-stakes , the of matters more than ever. And it's not a cliché! You can have perfect slides, bulletproof specifications, or the most advanced tools — but without trust, clarity, empathy, and precise interpretation, messages get lost.

When meetings are held in a foreign language (or under linguistic strain), participants’ hashtag rises, comprehension can slip, and decisions may skew.

For instance, in decision-making research, presenting problems in a foreign language has been shown to shift how (like framing or loss aversion) play out — reducing some intuitive biases, but at the cost of increased hashtag (cf. https://lnkd.in/eS9XFWVW).

In short: the precision of — the nuance, the pause, the checking of understanding — becomes essential. When we bring , clarity, and cultural sensitivity into technical dialogue, we ensure ideas don’t just pass, but land correctly.

For conference interpreters, English as a B language is both a superpower and a potential trap. If you don’t live in an English-speaking country, it’s dangerously easy to let your English drift into “Globish.” And while being conversationally fluent might make you feel confident — that part is like shooting fish in a barrel — true mastery is another story.

It’s about sounding natural, decoding cultural references, and delivering prosody that makes your audience forget they’re listening through an interpreter (yesss!).

That’s exactly what the English Intensive Workshop, which was offered as an add-on to the legendary CCIC, pushed me to do. In addition to enjoying the beauty in Cambridge, I used the intensive three days of training to absorb all the linguistic fine-tuning and cultural immersion by:
✨ Exploring Shakespeare’s works and training on the rich variety of meanings embedded in his language.
✨ Training prosody, rhythm and intonation until they felt native (or almost native!).
✨ Experiencing British culture in action — including an open-air performance of As You Like It in the magical gardens of St John’s College (wow, wow, wow!).

Being a seasoned interpreter in English B isn’t about “getting the words right.” It’s about getting the music right. It’s about nuance, cadence, and the subtle choices that carry meaning across cultures.

I’m really grateful for the intellectually challenging and deeply supportive community, the learnings, and the inspiration provided by wonderful teachers and mentors – Julia Poger Business, Conference and Diplomatic Interpreter, Patricia Magno-Holt, Chris Guichot de Fortis, and Marie-Jeanne (MJ) Vanleynseele.

Interpreting is not just a skill, it is an art.

📊 From 784 ppm to 1361 ppm CO₂ in just 20 minutes — measured during a recent interpreting assignment.

📸 The first photo shows the CO₂ level when we entered the booth. The second, taken less than half an hour later, shows a dramatic rise — and we still had over an hour to go.

Simultaneous interpreting requires sustained cognitive intensity, involving auditory processing, short-term memory, reformulation, and continuous speech production — all under time pressure.

But small, enclosed booths with limited ventilation can quickly become CO₂ traps, and this has measurable effects on brain performance.

🔬 At CO₂ concentrations above 1000 ppm, cognitive functions begin to decline:
-reduced concentration and mental clarity
-increased fatigue and slower reaction times
-impaired decision-making and verbal fluency
At 1400 ppm and beyond, these effects become more pronounced — a concerning fact when interpreters are expected to maintain peak performance for 90 minutes or longer.

🧠 To protect both cognitive accuracy and occupational health, regular breaks and proper ventilation are essential. This isn't just a question of comfort — it's a matter of quality assurance and workplace safety.

I regret I didn’t take a snapshot of the display when we were about to leave the booth, but I’m not so sure if you’d be willing to see it!

Two weeks ago, my profession took me to the — and I’m still buzzing with impressions! 📚✨
This year’s guest country Norway brought a Nordic breeze to the halls, and I had the pleasure of supporting the and taking care of the VdÜ (German Association of Literary Translators) exhibition stand.
We also shared leaflets, stickers, pens and many other goodies from the (German Association of Conference Interpreters), which sparked curiosity among young people exploring future careers in interpreting and multilingual communication (yes, indeed!).
A personal highlight: attending a reading with Nobel Prize winner Olga , who presented her thought-provoking new novel – a powerful work that is an ironic take on Thomas Mann’s “The Magic Mountain”.

Remember those fun look and find books we enjoyed as kids? Well, I just had the chance to revisit that joy thanks to a collaboration with Random House Verlagsgruppe GmbH / Prestel Verlag. I had the pleasure of translating a delightful storybook by Nikola Kucharska, 'A Year in the Castle.':

Reserves, equity, EPS... These terms are essential for conference interpreters who work at European works council meetings or annual general meetings. In addition to preparing for the respective assignment, it is extremely important to take a deep dive into these topics, because only then will you understand the context and won´t be surprised by abbreviations such as "FCF", "NOPAT" or "CFBIT". Many thanks to colleagues organising trainings on behalf of VKD and to Jacqueline Klemke for the training session on and reporting!

Following "Faszinierende Chemie" and "Faszinierendes Gehirn", "Faszinierende Physik" hits bookshelves as my third translation from the "fascinating" Springer series, perfectly rounding off my business area literary translation in 2023. Many thanks to PWN - Scientific Publishers (WN PWN S.A.)!
