I was completely exhausted from the past weeks and months. Since I didn’t really know any of the bands, I was very undecided. Still, I left around 8 pm towards the Schleyerhalle – knowing that it could get stressful because of the Volksfest and that I would miss the first two bands, The Amity Affliction and Thy Art Is Murder.
Not a single second regretted.
After the concert, I watched a long documentary about Parkway Drive. Before that, I had never really listened to them – and I was honestly touched. The guys started out in a small surfer town in Australia, playing hardcore in a shed on Parkway Drive with their friends.
Their first album was produced by the guitarist of Killswitch Engage (the second one as well). They played everywhere, even in front of just 10 people – always friendly, always heartfelt, and live even stronger than on record. They slept on the ground outside, kept evolving, and were eventually signed to Epitaph, paving the way to headlining major festivals.
What I found especially cool: they regularly released documentaries, showing themselves skating, surfing, and just being normal guys.
At some point, they were completely burned out. The whole band went into therapy – but came back stronger. Since then, they’ve kept evolving and refining their live show again and again.
Yesterday, they proved that in an impressive way.
Chapeau.
They’ve definitely gained a new fan.
