Our house story:
For those of you who have been following me for quite a while now, you know how much we struggled to find a house. For 5 years, we've been looking for one. We've been to many house viewings, and every time we fell in love with a house, we got denied for different reasons. There was always someone with more money, or the owner decided to give the house to someone else, or the bank didn't want to give us a loan.
For the past 10 years, we've been building our business, which started as a hobby, and we slowly began making a living from it. It's just me and my husband working 24/7 on our cosplays and crafting projects and sharing our passion with the world. Over the past few years, we saved every Euro we earned. We were lucky to get some pretty good jobs with big gaming publishers — those jobs helped us grow our business a lot.
But being self-employed in Germany is a nightmare (I'm sure it's the same in other countries)... it's all about paying taxes, pension — and I don't even want to start talking about health insurance.
Buying my own house has always been my biggest dream, but I never thought it would be sooo difficult for us. We are not rich, we don’t have rich parents, we didn’t inherit anything... the money for our house was 100% earned by ourselves through our small cosplay business.
Why am I telling you this? Because I am extremely proud of what we achieved — and because I know how hard we worked to get where we are now. Honestly, I was afraid to share more about the house with you because I’m sure there will be people who will begrudge us. But I thought about it, and I don’t want to hide what we achieved — I want to be proud and share it with the world.
The day we went to the house viewing, I immediately fell in love with the vibe and the architecture. That day, there were many other families interested in buying the house, so I honestly thought we wouldn't have a chance.
The past 5 years, we were never the lucky ones... but for the first time, we had a real chance — because the owner of the house liked us! And when we told him what we do for a living and what we had planned for the old pool room, he immediately was hooked!
For the first time, we were not seen as the weird self-employed cosplayers. You won’t believe how weird it is when people always ask you: “What’s your job? What do you do for a living?” and you tell them: “I’m a full-time cosplayer.”
Nowadays I prefer to just say: “I’m an artist.”
But most people connect “being an artist” with being poor... and if you want to buy a house, that’s not the best impression you can make. Haha, I guess you get the point.
Same goes for the bank... Which bank is willing to give you a loan when you tell them you're a full-time cosplayer? They just turn around and wish you a nice day.
If you’ve been watching my stories over the last years, you know I almost lost hope in finding a house for us and the cats — BUT we fought hard for our dream, and I still can’t believe it became reality.
