Did you know that witch trials were once a booming business? They were advertised with flyers. Some masses of people showed up. Lawyers, landlords, clerks: all got paid. In Trier, Germany, between 1581–1593, 368 people - nearly one fifth of the town's population - were executed for alleged witchcraft. By some accounts, it was the largest peacetime massacre in European history.
Truth and Lies: The Politics of Religion explores how faith - both historically and today - has been used to justify violence, control, and profit — often with deadly consequences.
On World Day for Victims of Religious Violence, we reflect on these histories to build a more just future.
