This week, three outstanding personalities have passed away, and now we also have to say goodbye to jazz pianist Richard Alan “Richie” Beirach. Born in New York in 1947, Beirach was a defining voice in modern jazz piano. On behalf of Intuition Music and Schott Music, we remember Richie Beirach with great respect and gratitude.

Over the years, he released numerous recordings, CDs and published sheet music with both labels. His artistic legacy as a pianist, composer and educator continues to inspire musicians worldwide.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends and all those who were close to him.

Richie Beirach passed away on January 26 at the age of 78. He will be deeply missed.

Mit großer Trauer nehmen wir Abschied von Dr. Peter Hanser-Strecker

Wir verlieren nicht nur einen langjährigen Verleger und Vorsitzenden unserer Geschäftsführung, sondern vor allem einen Menschen, der Schott Music mit Herz, Vision und unerschütterlicher Leidenschaft geprägt hat. Am 22. Januar 2026 ist er im Alter von 83 Jahren von uns gegangen.

Über ein halbes Jahrhundert begleitete er Komponist:innen wie György Ligeti, Krzysztof Penderecki und Carl Orff, bewahrte das kulturelle Erbe der Moderne und setzte sich unermüdlich für Musikerziehung, humanitäre Projekte und die unabhängige Zukunft unseres Hauses ein. Sein Engagement und seine Fürsorge für Menschen und Musik hinterlassen ein Vermächtnis, das weit über Notenblätter hinausreicht.

With deep sorrow, we bid farewell to Dr. Peter Hanser-Strecker.

Today we say goodbye, not only to the long-standing publisher and Chairman of our Executive Board, but above all a person who shaped Schott Music with heart, vision, and unwavering passion. On January 22, 2026, he passed away at the age of 83.

For over half a century, Dr. Hanser-Strecker supported composers such as György Ligeti, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Carl Orff, preserved the cultural heritage of modernism, and tirelessly advocated for music education, humanitarian projects, and the independent future of our company. His dedication and care for people and music leaves a legacy that extends far beyond sheet music.

Thank you to Roland Spiegel and BR Klassik Jazztime for the thoughtful radio tribute to guitarist and composer Ralph Towner. A pioneering jazz musician with a strong classical influence, Towner shaped a completely unique sound, especially through his work with the genre-defying band Oregon.

Er war ein Musiker mit völlig eigenem Ton. Der amerikanische Gitarrist und Komponist Ralph Towner, nicht zuletzt bekannt durch die stilistisch weit offene Band "Oregon", ist am 18. Januar 2026 im Alter von 85 Jahren gestorben.

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Ralph Towner, who died last week on January 18, 2026, in Rome. Over the decades, Ralph produced several projects with Intuition Records and left a lasting legacy through his extraordinary musicality, creativity, and friendship. He will be deeply missed.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones.

Your music lives on and will continue to inspire us all.

It is with deep sadness that we received the news of the death of music publisher Peter Hanser-Strecker.

Peter was not only a great inspiration to us, but also a good friend and great supporter of our label. The void he leaves behind is enormous. In his spirit, we will strive to carry the music he loved above all else further out into the world.

2025 was an exceptionally rich year for jazz. Week after week, the team at Jazz-Fun.de listened to, discussed and classified new releases. This ongoing work has resulted in our selection of the 50 best jazz albums of 2025 — a personal, curated snapshot of the music that shaped this year.
This list is not exhaustive. Instead, it reflects our editorial journey through the jazz year of 2025, featuring strong debuts, bold concept albums, established artists breaking new ground and many surprising discoveries. Sitting between tradition and the present, chamber music intimacy and open improvisation, and cross-genre approaches, jazz once again proves itself to be a vibrant, curious and contemporary art form.

FAZIT: Im Rahmen der 'INTUITION-Master-Series' erscheint das erstmals 1978 veröffentlichte Album „Behind Eleven Deserts“ des deutschen Jazzmusiker und Weltenbummlers STEPHAN MICUS, auf dem er voller Leidenschaft traditionelle und exotische Instrumente aus aller Welt spielt, aber auch als Sänger seine (manchmal schamanisch anmutende) Stimme erhebt. Hierbei begibt er sich in oft dunkle Harmonien, welche durch kristallklare balinesische und indische Flöten oder akustische Gitarren durchdrungen und erhellt werden. Mitunter entstehen hierbei meditative Klangwelten, welche den Hörer in die unterschiedlichsten Kulturen entführen und bei all den Grenzüberschreitungen immer wieder gefangennehmen. Ein herrlich friedvolles, aus der Zeit gefallenes Album, das gerade in diesen kriegerischen Zeiten so wertvoll wie eine weiße Fahne ist.
