🧠 "Laziness" or "Spoiled Child"? What if It’s ADHD?
Let’s Talk About What ADHD REALLY Looks Like in Nigeria
Ever seen a child labelled "olodo," "disruptive," or "just lazy"? Or an adult called "unserious" for missing deadlines? 🚨
What if it’s NOT character flaws… but ADHD?
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a REAL neurodevelopmental condition. In Nigeria, it’s often:
❌ Mistaken for spiritual attacks
❌ Dismissed as bad parenting
❌ Branded as laziness or indiscipline
Real ADHD Struggles in Naija Context:
▪️ A brilliant student failing exams because their brain won’t focus even when they try.
▪️ A talented employee labelled "careless" for missed details.
▪️ A child punished for fidgeting, though they CAN’T sit still.
▪️ Adults feeling "guilty" for forgetting family events or bills.
ADHD is NOT:
🔸 A spiritual curse
🔸 A lack of intelligence
🔸 Laziness or stubbornness
It’s a BRAIN DIFFERENCE affecting:
✅ Focus (distraction by noise like generators/busy markets)
✅ Impulse control ("acting without thinking")
✅ Emotional regulation (big reactions to small stress)
✅ Working memory (forgetting tasks mid-way)
How You Can Help:
1️⃣ Stop the Labels: Don’t call kids "unserious" or adults "irresponsible."
2️⃣ Listen & Observe: Struggles at school/work? Chaos at home? Don’t judge—ask questions.
3️⃣ Seek Knowledge: ADHD is manageable! Proper diagnosis (by a doctor) + strategies = LIFE-CHANGING.
To my ADHD Warriors:
You’re not broken. Your brain just works differently ✨
To Parents/Partners: Support > shame.
