Im Jahr 1952 hatte der ARD-Musikwettbewerb seine Premiere in München, wo ihn bis heute der Bayerische Rundfunk ausrichtet. Er gilt als der größte Wettbewerb für klassische Musik weltweit, da er jährlich in mehreren Fächern stattfindet und insgesamt 20 Wettbewerbskategorien umfasst. Für viele Künstler war München das Sprungbrett zur internationalen Karriere. The ARD International Music Competition is one of the most renowned and large-scale competitions of its kind, was founded in 1952 by the public broadcasting radio stations of the Federal Republic of Germany. The invitation to participate in this competition is extended to young musicians, who are ready to launch an international career.

For William Fielding, being an organist means doing what he loves. What a gift to make a living from music and feel that way about it.

🎶 Alongside his interview, hear William perform Francis Poulenc’s Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani in G minor, FP 93, in the final with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks conducted by Bar Avni.

All work and no play? Not with the Katarina String Quartet. 😂🎻
The Canadian-American ensemble won third prize at the 2026 ARD Competition. Then they swapped instruments – just for fun.
We were expecting a few laughs. We weren’t expecting them to STILL sound this good on each other’s instruments!
Seriously, how is that possible? 😂

Four musicians. Different cultures. One shared journey. ✨
Meet the Viatores Quartet: Louisa Staples and Johannes Brzoska on violin, Miguel Erlich on viola and Umut Sağlam on cello.

At the 2026 ARD International Music Competition, they won First Prize, the Audience Prize and the prize for the best interpretation of Camille Pépin’s commissioned work. Their awards also include the GENUIN classics, Klangerlebnis TÖLZ Winners’ Summit, GEWA, Henle Urtext and Marillon special prizes, plus a concert tour arranged by Impresariat Simmenauer.

Their backgrounds, experiences and cultures set them apart – and bring them together. Each arrived with a different story; as travellers, they found a shared path in music. That idea lives in their name: “Viatores”, Latin for “travellers”.

Our third Prizewinners’ Concert brought the 2026 ARD Competition prizewinners and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks together for an evening of shared music-making.
And the young talent wasn’t just in the spotlight: eight musicians from Akademie des Symphonieorchesters des Bayerischen Rundfunks joined the orchestra, bringing the next generation to both sides of the soloist’s stand. 💛

These artists have impressed audiences and jury alike with their talent, dedication, and artistic vision. Today, we celebrate not only the prize winners, but the beginning of journeys that will lead far beyond this stage.
