Maria McCloy (1976–2026)
We are heartbroken to hear that our beloved friend passed away last Tuesday evening in Johannesburg. Curator, art connector, music journalist, DJ and fashion lover. Fearless, funny, always pretty direct and full of passion. She was a connector, a fun person to hang out with, not driven by fame but passion. She will always be missed.
We first met at Ars Electronica more than 20 years ago in Austria with the whole Black Rage team. We ended up hanging out in Jo’burg together, diving into the exciting post-apartheid music world. The result was the compilation Mzansi Music: Young Urban South Africa (2004), with tracks by SA pioneers BOP, Zola, Mapaputsi, Mafikizolo, 340 ml, Tumi and H2O.
Soon later we were sitting in a tour bus driving through Europe with an allstar Bongo Maffin, their backing band, Mzekezeke, Brown Dash, Nthando. It was hilarious. Compilations like Ayobaness! The Sound of South African House (2010) followed, with DJ Cleo, Shana, Big Nuz, DJ Clock and DJ Mujava on board.
Maria’s passion for communication and for bringing people together was a constant inspiration. Again and again Maria helped us bring South African stars to Germany. Cassper Nyovest, Major League Djz, Mgo and his Pantsula dancers, the pastor of youth culture Pastor Mbhobho and DJ Tira to mention a few, and joined the Urban Africa Festival 2016, where Maria also gave a wonderful masterclass on South African fashion and street styles.
And whenever we headed to Johannesburg, Maria was our guide. From art gallery to fashion exhibition, opening to opening, she walked us through her city and introduced us to countless movers and shakers of that scene. Always with so much joy, so much fun, honesty, and that tireless excitement of hers.
You’ll be missed, Maria.
