Poème électronique must be regarded as the origin and key work of sound art, a relatively young art form that blends visible elements such as architecture, visual and video art, sculpture, and performance with invisible elements such as noise, sound, and tone to create a new unity. When this work by Edgard Varèse, Iannis Xenakis, and Le Corbusier was presented at the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels, the term “sound art” was not yet in common use; it only appeared in the 1970s.
Varèse, Xenakis, and Le Corbusier created a walk-in sculpture for Poème électronique to make a total work of art with sound, light, film, and architecture. Back then and now, the perfect interaction of place, space, time, and work was one of the highest goals of art, especially sound art.
As its name suggests, Neue Klangkunst is dedicated to contemporary sound art, one of the innovative art forms that opens up new aesthetic forms of expression, challenges disciplinary boundaries, and demands individual creative concepts beyond music, visual arts, performing arts, and media arts, without seeking to replace them.
The anarchy of breaking down artistic disciplines corresponds to the artistic conviction of New Sound Art and enables a new complete work, which we call TONALITY THEATER.
The aim is to enable sound art, interdisciplinary work with composition, and the narrative power of sounds; it is about intermedia art forms in which sounds merge with other arts and new media to create a complete work that reflects our culture.
New sound art aims to create space that in turn opens up new spaces and encourages the audience to develop and experience their own memories, feelings, and thoughts free from the intentions of the artists. The realization of sound art in collaboration with composers who are open to exploring new things plays a decisive role in this.
The five exhibitions/performances TONALITY THEATER will take place in Pavilion 333 on the east side of the Pinakothek der Moderne Munich in collaboration with Neue Klangkunst and the TUM Center for Culture and Arts.
At the intersection between the Pinakothek der Moderne and the Museum Brandhorst, a unique wood and glass cube was created with the collaboration of TUM. An art space in the heart of Munich's art district that invites visitors to enter and linger. All productions by TONALITY THEATER were conceived for this cube with transparent walls and open up a discourse on democracy, peace, and freedom.
