Winter & Winter is an internationally renowned music production, emerging from the JMT/Bamboo label. JMT/Bamboo was directed by Stefan Winter between 1985 and 1995 to document the contemporary developments of the jazz world, especially in New York. Since 1995, Stefan Winter and Mariko Takahashi develop a new, cross-border concept and found in the following years Winter & Winter in order to unite t

he currents of classical, contemporary and improvised music, as well as music from around the world. The special features include Audiofilms ("Cinema for closed eyes" as headlined by the magazine Der Spiegel). These sound stories originate on roads, streets, squares, in abandoned churches, barns, backyards, sometimes even in lofts, vaudevilles and on stage. The collage of recording situations rely on the narrative power of noises and music. In 2003 Winter & Winter started to release film productions (Film Edition) and after 2007 audiobooks (Literatur Edition) were added to the program. The visual appearance is carried out with works of the artists, photographers and graphic designers around the world.

At Pavillon 333 auf der Ostseite der Pinakothek der Moderne

Welcome speech:
Anja Muckenfuß, Managing Director of the TUM Center for Culture and Arts
Prof. Dr. Julia Lehner, Mayor of Nuremberg

Artist talk:
Björn Gottstein, Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung, with Gareth Davis and Stefan Winter

20-minute loop
5-channel video and 10-channel sound installation
(installation until 23.11. except Mon from 15:00-19:00 free entry)

Composition: Gareth Davis
Writing, directing: Mariko Takahashi and Stefan Winter

At nightfall, Pavilion 333 transforms into a sound art theater. The art cube with its transparent walls becomes an immersive experience. A poetic world of sound and imagery from the unfinished, gigantic Nuremberg Congress Hall, a relic of totalitarianism, tells of defiant and energetic resistance against a seemingly insurmountable power.
Gareth Davis begins a multi-part chorus and lets his notes fly freely. The temporal proximity as well as the temporal distance of sound and reverberation speak of space and time.

Poème électronique must be regarded as the origin and key work of sound art, a relatively young art form that blends visible elements such as architecture, visual and video art, sculpture, and performance with invisible elements such as noise, sound, and tone to create a new unity. When this work by Edgard Varèse, Iannis Xenakis, and Le Corbusier was presented at the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels, the term “sound art” was not yet in common use; it only appeared in the 1970s.

Varèse, Xenakis, and Le Corbusier created a walk-in sculpture for Poème électronique to make a total work of art with sound, light, film, and architecture. Back then and now, the perfect interaction of place, space, time, and work was one of the highest goals of art, especially sound art.

As its name suggests, Neue Klangkunst is dedicated to contemporary sound art, one of the innovative art forms that opens up new aesthetic forms of expression, challenges disciplinary boundaries, and demands individual creative concepts beyond music, visual arts, performing arts, and media arts, without seeking to replace them.

The anarchy of breaking down artistic disciplines corresponds to the artistic conviction of New Sound Art and enables a new complete work, which we call TONALITY THEATER.

The aim is to enable sound art, interdisciplinary work with composition, and the narrative power of sounds; it is about intermedia art forms in which sounds merge with other arts and new media to create a complete work that reflects our culture.

New sound art aims to create space that in turn opens up new spaces and encourages the audience to develop and experience their own memories, feelings, and thoughts free from the intentions of the artists. The realization of sound art in collaboration with composers who are open to exploring new things plays a decisive role in this.

The five exhibitions/performances TONALITY THEATER will take place in Pavilion 333 on the east side of the Pinakothek der Moderne Munich in collaboration with Neue Klangkunst and the TUM Center for Culture and Arts.

At the intersection between the Pinakothek der Moderne and the Museum Brandhorst, a unique wood and glass cube was created with the collaboration of TUM. An art space in the heart of Munich's art district that invites visitors to enter and linger. All productions by TONALITY THEATER were conceived for this cube with transparent walls and open up a discourse on democracy, peace, and freedom.

Mógil and Orri Huginn perform Adventa in the living room of Gunnar’s House, Dyngjuvegur 8, on December 2.

The ensemble performs music from the album Adventa, which is inspired by the classic novel Advent by Gunnar Gunnarsson (1889–1975). Actor Orri Huginn Ágústsson will read selected passages from the novel.

This is a unique experience where music, words, and space form a unified whole. Don’t miss this journey into the world of Benedikt.

Þetta er einstök upplifun þar sem tónlist, orð og rými mynda samofna heild. Ekki missa af þessari ferð um veröld Benedikts. Miðasala í fyrstu athugasemd.

Masako Ohta "My Music Garden" (910 294-2)

Masako Ohta chooses a haiku by Matsuo Bashō as the motto for her musical garden: For a while moonlit night over flowers. Ohta opens with “In a landscape” by John Cage and leads over to “Clair de lune” by Claude Debussy with the Intermezzo, Nº 2, A major by Johannes Brahms. Pattern B “Yabe” from Patterns of Plants by Japanese composer Mamoru Fujieda is just as much a part of her journey into the infinite nature of sounds as Fumio Yasuda's “Rain Forrest” and “Souvenir from Japan, Sakura for Piano” by Toshio Hosokawa. Masako Ohta combines classical music from Schubert, Mozart, Chopin and Zimmermann with contemporary Japanese sounds to create a poetic work of fine and sensitive timbres.

"Chromatic Renaissance"
(910 293-2)

Chromatics is a word derived from the Greek noun χρῶμα (khrṓma), meaning color, and the Greek adjective χρωματικός (khrōmatikós; colored).
During the Renaissance, new music was composed in the Western world, opening up a palette of (timbral) colors for the first time. Before the Renaissance, music (in Gregorian chant) existed only to convey the word, not to make an appearance itself; this changed completely after the 15th century. Music, like painting, exploded into new forms and colors, and the era of the modern age was ushered in.
Strange harmonies, mysterious voices - tones of passion and desire, of terror and fear, of the confusion of the sublime or of divine apparition... This is the world of musical colors that opened up in the age of the Chromatic Renaissance, giving rise to a music that is daring, adventurous and timelessly modern.
