Last Sunday, I had the immense pleasure of co-presenting our talk "Don't Push The Narrative - Improvise!" at Game Industry Conference alongside Nikolai Valentin Hilz!
We outlined how improv techniques can be used create character driven choice design in your game narrative, and demonstrated these techniques with some live improv!
We spun the tale of Scot and Gremlough, two characters in a boomer shooter who fell in love while escaping a circus full of two-headed, six-legged clowns!
The reception to the talk was amazing! I've never had so many people come up to chat or message me afterwards to ask further questions or share how much they enjoyed it!
So now we're already discussing ideas to improve it, as well as other improv-related game development talks!
GIC and Poznan were both incredibly welcoming and a great experience, I hope to make it back next year!
I'd also like to say some special thanks:
- to Senad Hrnjadovic for the pictures, being my sightseeing partner in crime, and general great hangs and chats
- Games/Bavaria for sponsoring our trip
- to Wojciech Becla for helping us get this talk into the conference (there was some initial scepticism, as it is quite a unique topic)
- Richard Schmidbauer for introducing us to the magic of 88 Whisky Bar
- And Simo Iliev, Logan Gabriel, Martin Bakardzhiev and André Bernhardt for being part of one of the coolest impromptu conference social groups ever!
