Werner Sollors is Cabot Professor of English, Emeritus, at Harvard University. In his essays, the BAA-honorary member crafts “a critical voice of enduring civility to develop a cosmopolitanism of the marginalized and overlooked,” as his colleague, the cultural critic Homi K. Bhabha states. Werner Sollors' work engages with the role of American literature, the significance of multilingualism, or the importance of in*******al relationships in American culture, among many other topics.

🎓 From July 16 to 23, 2025, the 's 13th Summer Academy took place in Montreal, QC 🇨🇦, allowing participants to engage with the topic "North American Narratives of Crisis and Repair, Past and Present." The international summer school brought together 16 (post-)doctoral researchers from 🇦🇹 Austria, 🇨🇦 Canada, 🇩🇪 Germany, 🇮🇹 Italy, 🇵🇱 Poland, 🇺🇸 the USA and 10 faculty members, also from both sides of the Atlantic.

💡 We look back on an incredibly rich and rewarding academic and cultural program. Beyond many intriguing topically focused talks by the participants and faculty members, a city tour through Old , a picnic at Mont Royal, and an excursion to Kahnawá:ke gave participants the opportunity to get to know some parts of the city and its surrounding area, along with the histories attached to them. Furthermore, a conversation with Susanne Aschi-Glesius, Germany's Consul General in Montreal, and Daniel Etzel, Director of The State of Bavaria in Quebec, allowed for a critical discussion about public diplomacy in the present moment. We are extending a very special "Thank you!" to our hosts at Goethe-Institut Montreal, most notably Nadja Furth and Nanna Henning, for their invaluable support and for providing this fantastic space for our event. Join us next Friday, July 11, 2025, at 4:00 p.m., for the second keynote lecture of the 23rd International Conference of the on "Labor, Unions, and the Future of Work" with Prof. Dr. Sherry Lee Linkon (Georgetown University)!

Black lives and communities have been largely erased in narratives of deindustrialization and its effects in the U.S., where most public and academic discourse about the economic shifts of the late twentieth century focus on the iconic white industrial worker. Sherry Lee Linkon will speak about ways in which Black women have been pushing back on that erasure, offering plays, fiction, essays, and photographic projects – a varied body of work, revealing a Black deindustrial imaginary of labor, family, and political resistance.

Next Thursday, July 10, 2025, the 23rd International Conference of the on "Labor, Unions, and the Future of Work" begins!

On the opening evening, we are particularly looking forward to the conference's first keynote lecture with Prof. Dr. Colin Crouch (University of Warwick & Max Planck Society | MPI for the Study of Societies). The British sociologist will explore a central paradox of late 20th century organized industrial relations: that the most powerful and centralized trade union organizations seemed to exercise wage restraint. What, then, did they offer their members? The answer seemed to be that they delivered social policy and non-wage benefits. In his talk, Colin Crouch will explore how this pattern has survived recent changes.
