I’m excited to share my latest adventure in 3D capture and reconstruction — this time featuring the Hünenborg monument in Rheine, Germany.
🗿 A bit of history
Built between 1925 and 1927 on the Thieberg hill, the Hünenborg serves as a war memorial for those who fell in the First World War. Designed by the Rheine-born painter Carl Murdfield, it consists of twelve towering, rough-hewn monolithic pillars arranged in a circular form. The stone ring above them is engraved with the names of battlefields in a runic-inspired script — giving the memorial its unique and solemn presence, reminiscent of Stonehenge.
🛠️ My 3D pipeline
• Captured with a DJI Air 3S
• 445 drone images taken
• Processed with RealityScan and Postshot
• Computation time: ~2 hours
The result is a highly detailed Gaussian Splatting model that allows us to explore and preserve this historic site in an entirely new, immersive way.
I’m always inspired by how technology and cultural heritage can intersect — keeping history alive while pushing the boundaries of digital innovation.
