In Kyrgyzstan there is a village, Nishni Chuisk, in Chui region. There are 2000 ha of farm land, run by farmer Osmonkul Kalysov, here on a picture with Hans-Jügen Zahorka. Intensive visits and talks about EU investment were held - e.g. solar panels, cold storage, greenhouses, cattle & dairy farming etc. Hopefully some expectations can be met!

Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan; Among several other obligations, the EUFAJ chief attended in mid-June the "Day of German Economy", organised by the German Foreign Chamber of Central Asia and the Kyrgyz Investment Agency. The purpose was establishing contacts to Kyrgyz journalists and gathering info about the economic situation. Hans-Jürgen Zahorka had been repeatedly in Kyrgystan on various EU missions. He also saw the leaders of International Business Council, IBC, and spoke with various enterprises and start-ups. See also: Siemens, Robert Bosch и другие. Boris Nemzov was an opposition politician in Russia with a high profile, also a former deputy prime minister of Boris Jelzin. He warned very early of Putin; with him in a responsible position history would have developed differently. But he was killed in Feb. 2015 in Moscow, like several other opposition people had been "liquidated".
We then published the 1st English version of his paper. It was a clear warning: Governments, parliaments, people should have known what it means to attack Ukraine for the Crimea and Donbass region. We could now write a lot about how to counter autocrat rulers and how to preserve what we call European Values. But if one reads the paper, you remain speechless and won't need this, probably.

With Fatih in Fatih/Istanbul: Excellent talks about the economy, the social situation, the problems of mega cities like Istanbul in Turkey - with Fatih Güzel, General Manager of dubb Ethnic Restaurant in Sultanahmed, Istanbul (right), and Hans-Jürgen Zahorka, EUFAJ chief (left). But also issues like Life Long Learning in the job and Human Resource themes had been covered. By the way: This restaurant has excellent Anadolu food!

Frankfurt/Main in Germany was the venue of the first "Pakistan - European Union Business & Investment Opportunities Summit" in these days. Under the presence of high-ranking speakers from Pakistan it was stated that Pakistan is on its way, has a solid industry, has lots of investment offers in the construction sector to offer, has an interested community overseas, and lots of young people who have an excellent formation - and everybody speaks English. Despite this, so some EU speakers,Pakistan should put an accent on ongoing Special Economic Zone projects, on internal security, and on trade diversification beyond the textile sector. Maybe there will be another summit aiming at small & medium enterprises, in IT, tourism, construction, renewable energy and environment, as it was proposed? The Summit was moderated in a TV-like manner by Saleha Zia.

The 21st Central Asia Media Conference organized by the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Harlem Désir, concluded recently in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan's capital. It was covered for EUFAJ by our Central Asia coordinator, N**ira Toktalieva.
During the two-day conference, journalists and representatives from the media and NGOs, together with international experts and state representatives from Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, discussed issues and challenges arising in the context of new media technologies in Central Asia. Topics included the conditions for establishing an open and secure internet, media for minorities and self-regulation.
The conference was also an opportunity to discuss the most recent media freedom developments across the region.The conference was opened by Désir, together with the Minister of Culture, Information and Tourism of the Kyrgyz Republic, Azamat Zhamankulov, the First Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Nuran Niyazaliev, and the Head of the OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek, Ambassador Pierre von Arx.

Comment on a raid on Key Nicaraguan civil society organization by UN Human Rights Office

Following our post by EUFAJ contributor Carmen Aguilera (see below) a new press release by UNHRO was issued: "GENEVA (8 February).- We are extremely troubled that on Thursday,7.2.2019, agents from the Nicaragua Ministry of Interior conducted a raid, allegedly without a warrant as required by law, on the offices of the Red Nicaragüense para la Democracia y Desarrollo (commonly known as ‘Red Local’), which is a coalition comprising 22 civil society organizations working across the country. Documents and assets were seized, and according to some reports, two of Red Local’s staff were detained for a few hours and subsequently released.

Red Local and the network of NGOs it supports perform crucial work on behalf of ordinary Nicaraguans, and they should be able to operate without fear of harassment by the authorities.

The assault comes just six days after a group of Nicaraguan civil society representatives, including some members of Red Local, met with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet in Geneva and told her of their concerns about the increasing restrictions on civic space and expression of dissent in Nicaragua.

We call on the Nicaraguan authorities to enable civil society to work freely and to continue their cooperation with UN institutions and mechanisms without facing reprisals. Harassment of civil society organisations is a violation of the rights to freedom of opinion and expression, peaceful assembly and association, she stressed.

Thursday’s raid (from 7.2.2019) is the latest in a series of actions targeting civil society organizations that have been critical of the Government. Between November and December last year, a total of nine NGOs had their legal registration cancelled. Raids on media outlets have also been reported and a number of journalists have been arrested, including some accused of terrorism-related crimes. As of last week, 66 journalists had reportedly fled the country."
