Area Composer Peter, Ron and Dorothee are working on audio visual portraits of extraordinary sites. The slow, seemingly imperceptible change deepens the view.

Together with innovative projection and sound technology they turn into room installations, which allow completely new perceptions and interpretations. AREA COMPOSING - CATCHING THE SPIRIT OF PLACES

IMAGE - SOUND - PLACE
These are the three components of Area Composing. The image moves very slowly, a merging of motion-blurred and hyper-sharp photographs, a Liquid Image. The sound is everything ev

er heard, composed in a new way: a landscape of sounds, noises, voices, music, a soundscape. Ideally, the place of performance is the place of origin of images and sound: a room, a building, an art object, onto which the image is exactly mapped. This creates interaction between image and sound and place – and audience. LIQUID IMAGE
Photographs get into motion, communicate with each other, form a connection. The recognition of the single images is no longer important. Instead: associations, emotions, new perceptions. SOUNDSCAPE
Tones, melodies, noises, voices, sounds mix to the sound of the place, open it up in a new way. Visual and acoustic perception interweave inseparably. Only now, the place becomes entirely detectable. It opens itself to the viewer, lets him enter. PLACE - INTERACTION
If the image-sound composition returns to the place from which it has arisen, the Area Composing becomes complete. The mise-en-scène transforms the place, turns it and the audience into fellow players. Interaction becomes an experience. WHAT DOES AN »AREA COMPOSING« DO? The slow imperceptible merging of the pictures intensifies the view on the sites and slows you down. Abstract aggregates into concrete, concrete dissolves again. The soundtrack picks up the exiting metamorphosis and widens the visual experience by the emotional power of the sound. The audience immerses completely into the portrait and develops a personal relation to the site out of its impressions and associations. WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS?
»Area Composings« have the greatest impact when brought back to their origin in the form of media installations. Therefore they are erfectly suitable as image-building design elements for companies, institutions or communities. They are applicable as:
• Fixed installation inside or outside (art on the building / public art)
• Fixed integration in room concepts or rather in the corporate identity
(part of the interior design)
• Temporarily installation (exhibition, performance, hence live event)

Heute hatten wir Besuch von Jens und Sebastian, Architekturstudenten der Uni Bochum. Sie haben uns zu PHARUS interviewt, unserem Area Composing für den Mariendom Neviges, über den sie gerade ein Videoprojekt erstellen. GENIUS LOCI FESTIVAL | OPEN CALL COMPETITION: „FAUST“

Genius Loci Weimar is looking for innovative ideas for the projection festival from the 05-07 September 2025! This years theme will be Goethe’s literary masterpiece FAUST.

We expressly encourage short film makers, motion graphic artists, and video and film artists of all disciplines and genres to apply for the selected location with their different aesthetics, animation techniques, and narrative styles.

Participants have until JUNE 15TH 2025 to submit their work.
The two winners will be awarded a total of €25,000 and their work will be presented at the festival.

Genius Loci Weimar sucht innovative Ideen für das Projektionsfestival vom 05. bis 07. September 2025 in Weimar!

Wir ermutigen ausdrücklich Kurzfilmemacher:innen, Motion Grafiker:innen sowie Video- und Filmkünstler:innen aller Sparten und Genres, sich mit ihren unterschiedlichen Ästhetiken, Animationstechniken und Erzählweisen für die ausgewählten Orte zu bewerben.

Teilnehmende haben bis zum 15. JUNI 2025 Zeit, ihre Entwürfe einzureichen.

Die zwei Gewinnerarbeiten werden mit insgesamt 25.000 Euro prämiert und während des Festivals gezeigt.

Wir sind eine Künstlergruppe aus Leverkusen. Für ein audiovisuelles Kunstwerk suchen wir einen LKW-Fahrer, der uns seine Fahrerkabine zeigt und fotografieren lässt. Großraum Köln/Düsseldorf/Ruhrgebiet. Damit verbunden ist eine Einladung in unser Atelier zur Preview am 23. März. Weitere Infos:

Our Story

WHAT IS »AREA COMPOSING«? »Area Composings« are audio visual portraits of extraordinary sites. Together with innovative projection and sound technology they turn into installations, which allow completely new perceptions and interpretations. Indoor and Outdoor. WHICH MOTIFS ARE SUITABLE FOR AN »AREA COMPOSING«? Sites, landscapes, architecture, street scenes or a whole city with its history. HOW IS AN »AREA COMPOSING« CREATED? Photographer Peter Hölscher captures the motifs with his special exposure technique, always in motion, pretty similar to a camera ride. The result is a partial motion blur, which releases the photography from its mimetic fidelity. Later Hölscher puts the photos together to a sequence of pictures, which are merging in an extremely slow manner – he calls it the »Liquid Image«. Composer Ronald Gaube roams the sites with his highly sensitive microphones and recording gear to bring out as many facets of their sounds as possible. Later he arranges parts of his sound recordings, gathered sound documents as well as electronic sound structures and compositions to a soundtrack. In all stages of the project the two artists are working closely together, so that sound and image compositions can develop context-sensitive and finally unite to the »Area Composing«.
