TOM wird 20, und sein Erfinder Andreas Hykade singt ein Lied für ihn. Auch der KiKA feiert den Geburtstag: am 15. 11. 2025 mit einem ganzen Samstag voller TOM-Filme. The great master of provocation has left us.

We got to know Phil Mulloy well. In 2002, he asked Studio Film Bilder to produce THE FINAL SOLUTION, the third part of his Intolerance trilogy. How was that supposed to work? Phil was known for making his films alone, without a storyboard, following his own intuition completely!

It turned out to be a wonderful collaboration. Our four animators created 24 minutes in four months. The die-hard lone wolf Phil achieved a directing miracle without pressure, but with a lot of charm and persuasiveness. The result looked 100% Mulloy. THE FINAL SOLUTION is not a foreign body in the trilogy, although it differs from the other two parts not only in terms of teamwork. The technology is also completely different. It is the first time that a Mulloy film has been produced digitally. Phil prepared all the shots in Photoshop, and our team realised the animation with Cel Action (digital cut-out). This may have been a historic moment. Phil embraced digital technology in his subsequent works. He proved that computer design does not necessarily have to be impersonal, smooth and perfect. He effortlessly imposed his own style on the new technology: rough and daring as ever.

We learned a lot from Phil Mulloy. We will miss him. The brutally direct filmmaker with a sharp eye for our society, as well as the kind man with the gentle voice and friendly smile.
