Waste management and environmental services provider PreZero Deutschland has agreed to acquire German company RE.LION.BAT. Circular GmbH based in Meppen, Lower Saxony, where it claims to operate Europeʼs largest recycling facility for lithium-ion batteries.

According to PreZero, the plant processes up to 30,000 tons of used batteries per year. An expansion to a capacity of 60,000 tons has also been approved.

US Battery company Lyten has entered into a binding agreement to acquire the remaining Northvolt assets in Sweden and Germany.

Lyten reports that the production capacity of the acquired sites is 16 GWh, with an additional 15 GWh under construction.

The European Commission has selected six projects focusing on the production of battery cells for electric vehicles to receive a total of 852 million euros from its Innovation Fund. Financed by revenues from the EU Emissions Trading System, the goal is to increase battery production in Europe and to contribute to decarbonization while strengthening the industry.

The projects come from ACC - Automotive Cells Company, Verkor, CELLFORCE GROUP, Leclanché SA, NOVO Energy and LG Energy Solution.

The European Union has launched a Strategic Dialogue and Action Plan for the automotive industry, committing €3.8 billion to strengthen European battery production and address sector challenges.

This ambitious initiative aims to:

- Achieve over 50% European added value along the automotive value chain by 2030.

- Support domestic battery manufacturing through a dedicated 'Battery Booster' package.

- Establish European content requirements for battery cells and components in EVs.

- Create a secure and competitive supply chain for battery raw materials.
