🎄 The holiday is coming very soon, meaning Christmas concerts are arranged everywhere. 🎶
Let us share with you today an excerpt of a concert of this kind: the performance of the “Kyrie” by Battista Pradal, a resident composer of PH Publishers and the Artistic Director of Venezia in Musica ! 🎁

🎼 The piece is based on the use of modal melodic lines that evoke the Gregorian chant. It aims to combine spirituality arising from the use of the ancient mode, with harmonies that include both archaic harmonic intervals, of fourth and fifth, and dissonant chords more complex and modern.

🎵 Listen to the unique and wonderful sound of this piece, performed by the Female Choir of NKS Konzervatória Žilina, under the conducting of Maestra Barbara Prosová Lipková, at the choir’s Christmas concert two days ago!

On this day 195 years ago, the great American poet Emily Dickinson was born.
Throughout the decades, her poems have become the lyrics of several new compositions.

Let us share with you two such pieces today.
Written for the same poem by two Italian composers, both have won a prize at the
Composition Competition “Nuove Musiche dalla Livenza” 2022 composition contest Nuove Musiche dalla Livenza.

The Prize Winners of the International AVE VERUM Composition Competition 2021 represent a wide range of choral music culture.

The three pieces shared so far were written by composers from Italy, Canada and Germany -
And the winner of the 3rd Prize is “Ave Verum” by Chris Artley from yet another country, namely New Zealand!

As with all of Artley’s choral works, this music is very much text-driven: the melodies and harmonies follow the rhythm and meaning of the words.
The piece is filled with memorable melodic lines and beautiful harmonies; all typical features of Chris Artley’s musical style.

“Ave Verum Corpus” by Albrecht Haaf!

In this piece, a four-part mixed choir is hailing, mourning, and praying to Christ and his sacrifice through expressive melodies and phrases, moving both singers and audience deeply.

Last week, we celebrated the birthday of the composer winning 1st Prize at the 2021 International AVE VERUM Composition Competition.
Now, we would like to continue to introduce to you the other winners!

The 2nd Prize was shared between two great compositions.

First: “Ave Verum” by Gerda-Blok Wilson.
Written for a four-part female choir, the music creates a mystical atmosphere, contrasting high-soaring angelic melodies and deep chanting voices.

Happy Birthday, Paolo Orlandi!

Let us celebrate his successes in composition by sharing again his piece “Ave Verum” which won 1st Prize at the International AVE VERUM Composition Competition in 2021. The competition aims to promote choral music by inspiring new repertoire, focusing on Mozart’s Ave verum corpus for SATB choir, string quartet, and organ. And Orlandi’s piece is a perfect emotional depiction of the liturgical text about honouring Christ’s suffering and sacrifice.

Today we conclude our recommendations of Italian compositions with a three-part mixed youth choir piece. Written by Giorgio Susana on three poems by Liliana Nadal,“Trittico Liquentiano” is another Prize Winner of the Composition Competition “Nuove Musiche dalla Livenza” 2022.

This piece is about the river Livenza - in the first part the character of Livenza is described; then the lyrics talk about the river and the passing of life around it; and finally the third part of this cycle of short songs ponders about the philosophical meaning of the river.

Already sung a lot of Italian pieces and looking for a new one?
Choirs who like going to international competitions know that it is often recommended, or even compulsory, to sing a piece by a composer born in the country where the event takes place.

We are happy to tell you that if your choir’s next destination is Italy, then we have a few prize-winning suggestions for you!

The first composition we would like to introduce here is “Tutti li miei penser parlan d’Amore” by Eddy Serafini. Written on a beautiful love poem by Dante Alighieri, the lyrics and the music speak about conflicting thoughts and feelings evoked by love.

“And thus, being all unsure which path to take,
Wishing to speak I know not what to say,
And lose myself in amorous wanderings…”

The piece has won 2nd Prize at the 1st Concorso Internazionale di Composizione Corale …a riveder le stelle…ANDCI 2021.

If you are looking for a composition with a Halloween spirit…
We have an idea for you!

With his composition “Al sommo d’una porta”, Paolo Orlandi has won 1st Prize at the 1st Concorso Internazionale di Composizione Corale …a riveder le stelle…ANDCI 2021.

The piece is composed on the text on the Gate of Hell, as written in Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. Together with the text, the music goes through the feelings of dread, reverence, love and desperation.

Through me the way into the suffering city,
Through me the way to the eternal pain,
Through me the way that runs among the lost.

Justice urged on my high artificer;
My maker was divine authority,
the highest wisdom, and the primal love.

Before me nothing but eternal things
were Made, and I endure eternally.
Abandon every hope, who enter here.
