Apo Hiking Society: The Timeless Soundtrack of Filipino Love

From campus halls in the late ’60s to concert stages across the country, the Apo Hiking Society has become a cornerstone of Original Pilipino Music (OPM). Formed by Jim Paredes, Boboy Garovillo, and Danny Javier, the group is beloved for blending humor, honesty, and harmony in their songs.

One of their most iconic tracks, “When I Met You” (1980), continues to capture the hearts of listeners, old and new. With over 54 million streams on Spotify, it’s one of the most played OPM love songs of all time. Whether you first heard it at a wedding, on the radio, or from a karaoke-loving tito, its timeless message of love never fails to hit home.

Let’s get to know our next OPM artist, Mari Chico and her newest single “P**ang P**a”.

MOA: P**ang P**a” is such a striking title—can you walk us through the story or emotion behind it? What does ‘red’ symbolize in this song for you?

Mari Chico: "P**ang-pula" is a P.O.V. or a point of view of someone who is slowly falling for a person who gives mixed signals of emotions. It's a story of a friend who despite the advices of the people around her can't help but continue to like that person. Last July 2024, JC Cobra, my co-writer, a friend, and content creator in Tiktok, in one of our live streams, asked me to finish the lyrics and melody he has that will remind our friend to guard her heart...the rest is I guess...history.

MOA: As both a singer and songwriter, do you find it easier to express vulnerability through melody or lyrics—and how did P**ang P**a challenge or empower you in that process?

Mari Chico: “2. Oh as for me, yes, my vulnerability is quite visible thru music in general. Back in 2022, I used to give out advice thru podcasts, direct messages, but I guess having to learn how to write songs and sing them makes it more special. To be able to express emphatically how I would be there for my friends while balancing my own emotions to send the message across does the magic for every song I write thus the birth of theme of my compositions.”

MOA: If P**ang P**a were a scene in a movie, what would it look or feel like—and who would you cast to play the lead role?

Mari Chico: “3. Geez, if I would always go for "Kath-Niel" if P**ang-pula will become a movie. I will leave it to your imagination as to the plot by dropping my most fave line of the song..."Pero sabi nila, wag na ikaw, walang tyansa".

MOA: When people hear your name or your music, how do you want them to remember you? What’s the essence of ‘Mari Chico’ that you hope stays with them?

Mari Chico: “I guess I want people to remember me as if there is BNK or Bahay Ni Kuya...there's also "Kanta Ni Ate" thing. I want my songs to be their gentlest hugs and comfort in their highs and lows. My friends reminded me of how my songs create this impact whenever they want me to sing "Crush Back" during our live streams in the past before the song was released. I want to create more "I Get You" songs that will make people feel that they don't need to feel alone. That there is this one "Silent Chismosang Composer" that was there for them at some point in their lives and wrote about it *wink-wink.”

Meet Jam Custodio: Ilongga Singer-Songwriter Making Waves with Her New Single

Hi jam, Music On Air wants to feature your new song “SIGURADO”, could you answer these 3 questions?

MOA: What inspired you to write this new single, and is there a personal story behind it? -

Jam: “My song is all about giving comfort and healing, inspired by the love of my life, who’s been through so much. The first verse—'Laging may duda sayong puso't isipan, dala nang sakit ng iyong nakaraan'—talks about the pain she carries from a tough childhood and difficult relationships, making her feel unworthy of love. But the chorus is my promise to her that now that I’m here, she’ll never have to feel alone again.

I’ll always be by her side, through every high and low, loving her no matter what. The second verse is my side of things—how she’s helped me heal from my own past struggles. I’ve got my own flaws, but what makes me love her even more is that she made me love the version of myself I used to hate. This song is about two imperfect people finding each other and fixing what’s broken together.”

MOA: How does this song differ from your previous releases in terms of sound or message?

Jam: “This song feels different from the others I’ve made. Maybe it’s because I’m truly a part of it this time. I’ve spent so much time writing for others, but this one’s for me. It feels more real, more personal—and honestly, when I sing the parts that are about me, I can’t help but cry. I never imagined I’d experience this kind of love and peace.”

MOA: What do you hope your listeners will feel or take away after hearing this track?

Jam: “I want my listeners to feel that healing takes time. That even though love can be tough, it’s always worth holding onto because, eventually, everything will fall into place. We all have our own pasts and scars, but those are just part of what helps us grow—especially when it comes to learning to love ourselves more. Love isn’t just about finding someone else; it’s also about finding peace within.”
