Dansk vinyl DJ fra KBH. Vinder af Wax Poetics & Polaroid samt Reloops mix competition.

Nyboe er en dansk vinyl DJ, der har spillet landet rundt i de sidste godt 20 år på alt fra natklubber og caféer til koncerter, festivaler og jams. Han specialiserer sig i især i det lidt glemte, oversete eller helt nyt numre folk ikke har opdaget eller som slet ikke er udgivet endnu officielt. Hvert et set er en rejse gennem lyd, hvor der er fokus på alt fra stemning og lyrik til toner og rytme. N

yboes hovedfokus er hiphop - især instrumental / lo-fi, dansk rap, jazzy boom bap og G-Funk - samt genrer som (neo)soul, trip hop, R&B, breaks, library music og jazz. Udover at DJ’e er Nyboe også pladeansvarlig hos den danske hiphop- og graffitibutik Run For Cover, har også været med til at udgive langt over 100 danske hiphop-udgivelser og er også selv stor pladesamler. Og så er han dobbelt vinder af Reloops internationale Mixtape Monday konkurrence med sine livemixes fra hiphop-jams, hvor man ofte ser ham udfolde sig.

I aften på Funhouse : Café Vinyl & Vinbar optager jeg et vinyl-mix filmet af Capsula til YouTube kanalen Diggin Time med kun dansk musik.

Det er fra kl 19, hvorefter jeg spiller et par timers jazz-funk, library music, soundtracks, breaks og rare grooves fra rundt i verden.

I denne måneds episode af WaxWorks er jeg gået en sen aftentur med min gamle DJ-partner René Middelhede for at tale om vores begyndelse for 20 år siden og rejsen vi har været på siden.

Så lyt med til en ærlig snak om udfordringerne ved at starte som DJ tilbage dengang, om at studere legendariske danske DJ's i årevis på afstand, det kulturelle centrum og det netværk, som fandtes i pladebutikkerne, at spille til hiphop-jams og hiphoppens tilstand tilbage i 2000'erne.

Men også en snak om, hvordan nysgerrighed kan føre en på andre veje, og hvordan vi begge voksede fra hinanden - primært gennem vores skift i musiksmag og kulturer - og hvordan René endte med at studere på musikkonservatoriet og bo i Berlin og lave techno.
Nu er han tilbage og laver hiphop-beats igen, ren full circle.

Dette er den tredje special i 20-års jubilæumsserien - efter vinyl-mixtapet sidste måned og 2000'er-hiphop-specialen måneden før.

NYT VINYL-MIX

Sidste lørdag lavede jeg et vinyl-mix til Black Rhino Radio i anledning af Dia de los Mu***os med en masse spansk og latin musik.

Nu kan mixet også høres på SoundCloud og Mixcloud - links i kommentarfeltet.

Der er musik fra både rundt i Sydamerika, Mellemamerika, Caribien, Antillerne, Spanien, Portugal, Danmark, Tyskland, Belgien og Japan.

Another milestone looking back at my 20 years as a DJ and something I’m proud of is winning the Wax Poetics x Polaroid DJ-mix competition From The Pages back in 2023.

The theme was Soul Searching, so I went into my loungey mode and put together a live-mix using a mixture of Serato vinyl and real vinyl, as I felt a lot of the thing I wanted to play, I didn’t have on vinyl.

The mix contains 28 tracks from artists like Kali Uchis, douniah, Adi Oasis, Arlo Parks, Ju Kaia, Jorja Smith, KAYTRANADA, Thundercat, Childish Gambino, Alannah Chapman, Cookin Soul, Wale The Sage, Oddisee and more.

As you can guess from that, my focus in the mix was modern / nu soul and instrumental beats and trying to set a certain mood for an hour straight.

The mix was put on Wax Poetics’ SoundCloud page and played on Polaroid Radio as well. It includes an introduction to the mix by a very tired me, as I had done the mix just before the deadline.

Later I released the mix on limited official Wax Poetics cassette tapes. I also won a Polaroid camera that I have used for some dope press photos.

I’m looking back at some of my experiences through 20 years as a DJ as part of my 20th anniversary as a DJ this month and one of those is the the two MixtapeMonday mixtape competitions I won sending in live-mixes recorded live at Lille VEGA and Forbrændingen.

Both of these mean a lot to me, as they were both coming when I was just getting back on track after having been out for years both times with serious neck injuries and permanent nerve damage.

In 2012 a disc burst in my neck leaving me inactive as a DJ for three years - after which I had to learn to DJ all over again. After a slow start getting back at it I started DJ’ing at hiphop jams and being the live-DJ for artists again in 2016 and went on part of the tour with Kejser A and Binær, DJ’ing for Kejser A and also being the resident-DJ the first hour and between the acts.

At the last show in Lille Vega in Copenhagen in March of 2017 I recorded the set the first hour before the first act. Then about a month later I sent it in to Reloop - Solutions for DJs’ mixtape competition MixtapeMonday - even though it was a live-mix with all it’s errors - and won for May 2017.

That really gave me a boost and got me going even more - also made me record more of my live-sets (when I remembered it) - and upload them to my Mixcloud or SoundCloud.

In 2020 I had the same neck injury, just one joint higher. Was out for two years and then came back in 2022 where I recorded the live-set I did at the first gig I had at Forbrændingen in Albertslund.

Then around September 2022 I sent it in to Reloop’s MixtapeMonday mixtape competition and won again with a live-mix. And that gave me the boost to go to where I am now three years later.

As this month is my 20th anniversary as a DJ I am looking back at some of memories through the years.

One of those is this photo session by Jonas Højgaard Andersen from when I was DJ’ing with O-Jay and we were named DJ’s of the month by We Are Music / WAMDJS.COM back in November 2008.

It involved an article with these photos and that people could download our first - and only - mixtape WaxWorks pt 1 on the site.

The photo shoot took place in a backyard on Mejlgade in Aarhus as far as I remember. I think it was the photographer, Jonas’ idea smashing the records with a fast shutter speed and compile them smashing and breaking around us.

I still think these pictures are very dope and I look back at that time and the mixtape very fondly.

The 20th Anniversary mixtape has been out for a week now on cassette tape and streaming.

It’s all late-90’s and 2000’s hiphop - 34 tracks to be exact. Mostly US, but a few German as well and six with either Danish production or rap. All from vinyl.
