🚢 Wallenius Lines becomes sole owner of Wallenius SOL

Wallenius Lines has entered into an agreement to acquire SOL Group’s shares in WALLENIUS SOL, becoming the sole owner of the company.

The new ownership structure is intended to provide greater stability, clarity and long‑term continuity, supporting the company’s further development as a provider of sustainable, sea‑based infrastructure in Northern Europe.

Wallenius SOL plays a key role in connecting industrial supply chains across the Gulf of Bothnia, the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, enabling efficient maritime transport between northern Sweden, Finland, continental Europe and the British Isles.

🚢 Concordia Damen to deliver 41‑metre river pusher to Paraguay

Concordia Damen Shipbuilding has signed a contract to deliver a 41‑metre shallow‑draft river pusher (CDS 4115) for operations on the Paraguay–Paraná river system, with delivery scheduled for 2027.

Designed for inland logistics, the vessel will support cargo transport along the 2,600+ km Paraguay River. In a push‑barge configuration of up to 12 barges, the convoy can reach around 281 metres in length, enabling efficient large‑scale transport.

Powered by Caterpillar Inc. engines delivering approximately 5,490 HP, the vessel is optimised for low‑water conditions, allowing continued operations during dry seasons when water levels drop.

The project underlines the importance of purpose‑built shallow‑draft vessels in maintaining reliable and efficient inland shipping across South America.

🚨 VIKING Helix shapes simpler, easier ship evacuation at speed

A new generation marine evacuation system from VIKING Life-Saving Equipment Equipment is designed to deliver faster passenger evacuation, simpler crew operation and reduced service complexity for cruise and ferry operators.

Developed for vessels requiring high evacuation capacity, the VIKING Helix introduces a helix‑type slide that allows 4–8 people to evacuate simultaneously, enabling the controlled evacuation of up to 477 persons within 30 minutes into high‑capacity life rafts alongside the vessel.

The system features an automated bowsing mechanism that keeps life rafts correctly aligned with minimal crew involvement, supporting safe evacuation even under varying trim and list conditions.

Designed for both newbuild and retrofit applications, it can be installed without welding to the ship’s structure and is particularly suited to larger ferries and small to mid‑size cruise ships.

By combining higher evacuation flow with reduced manual handling, the system reflects a broader focus on enhancing safety through efficiency and smarter design.

⚡ Electric ship factory project launched to advance industrial‑scale shipbuilding

The Electric Ship Factory (ESF) project has been launched as a two‑year initiative aimed at accelerating the development of fully electric RoPax and RoRo vessels for European short‑sea routes.

Led by Rauma Marine Constructions Oy (RMC) and developed in collaboration with industry partners and research organisations, the project focuses on industrialising shipbuilding through modular vessel design, automated construction processes and integrated lifecycle solutions. The goal is to establish a scalable and repeatable model for zero‑emission ship production.

The initiative targets key challenges currently limiting the transition to electric shipping, including restricted shipyard capacity, long delivery times and the need for scalable onshore charging infrastructure. By applying standardised modules and Industry 4.0 production methods, the project aims to significantly reduce build times and improve cost efficiency.

By combining digitalisation, automation and energy integration, the ESF project is expected to support a shift towards factory‑based shipbuilding, enabling faster deployment of zero‑emission vessels and strengthening capabilities for future maritime decarbonisation.

🚢 D. Oltmann orders four 10,000 TEU newbuilds in Korea

German shipowner D. Oltmann Reederei GmbH & Co. KG is reported to have placed orders for four 10,010 TEU container vessels at South Korea’s Shipbuilding & Construction, marking a significant step in the company’s fleet development strategy.

The orders were placed in two tranches in February and April, with delivery scheduled for 2028 at two‑month intervals between April and October. At around 289 metres in length and 45.6 metres in beam, the vessels will represent the maximum size the Busan yard can construct.

The ships are expected to feature conventional propulsion systems equipped with exhaust‑gas scrubbers, aligning with current regulatory requirements while maintaining operational flexibility. For Oltmann, the order signals a notable expansion of a fleet that currently comprises 14 container vessels operating on charter to major liner companies including Maersk, Hapag‑Lloyd and ONE.

While no firm charter agreements have been disclosed, market observers suggest that orders of this scale are unlikely to be placed without strong confidence in continued demand for mid‑size container tonnage.
