The Great Workroom in Frank Lloyd Wright’s S.C. Johnson & Son Administration Building is celebrated for its open design, made possible by the lack of internal structural supports along the perimeter. Wright’s innovative use of glass tubing maximizes natural light while providing privacy for employees, creating a bright, glare-free work environment. This combination of ample daylight and architectural elegance fosters creativity and well-being, making the space as functional as it is beautiful.

The Brion Tomb, designed by Carlo Scarpa in San Vito d’Altivole, Treviso, Italy, serves as the burial site for the Brion family. Completed between 1968 and 1979, this commemorative monument blends Venetian and Japanese influences within its 2,200 m² layout. Commissioned by Onorina Brion after her husband’s death, the site includes distinct entrances, a meditation pavilion, and a chapel nearly submerged in water. The twin sarcophagi of Giuseppe and Onorina Brion symbolize their enduring bond. Scarpa's use of concrete, mosaic, and bronze showcases his architectural mastery. Conserved in 2021, the site was donated to the Italian Environmental Fund in 2022.

The North Christian Church in Columbus, Indiana, completed in 1964, is one of Eero Saarinen’s most profound works. Its iconic 192-foot spire connects the heavens to the Earth, a symbolic gesture of faith. The hexagonal sanctuary, with its ripple-like seating and central altar, creates an inward spiritual focus. Natural light filters through an oculus above, illuminating the cast-in-place concrete ceiling, enhancing the sense of transcendence. Saarinen’s design separates auxiliary spaces underground, reinforcing the sanctity of worship above. Commissioned by J. Irwin Miller, this National Historic Landmark remains a powerful critique of modern trends that minimized sacred spaces.

In Saint-Sulpice, Charlotte Perriand liked to host her friends in her apartment, thanks to the “Bar under the Roof” that she invented. It was an attic room transformed into a bar where the “flapper” could party. In this photo, Charlotte poses with Le Corbusier, Djo Bourgeois, a prominent decorator of the time, Jean Fouquet, a jewelry designer, and, in the background, Percy, her first husband. They are all great friends and gather at Charlotte’s, with the young avant-garde generation. As often, in this photo, Charlotte is the only woman surrounded by men.

Friedrick Kiesler’s Endless House challenges architectural norms with its flowing, cornerless design and emphasis on adaptability. The flattened spheroid structure invites natural light into every space while symbolizing the cyclical rhythms of life. Kiesler’s correalism philosophy, blending human needs with spatial relationships, forms the foundation of this concept. Presented at MoMA in 1958–1959 through models and “polydimensional” drawings, the project reflected innovation in materials like molded plastic and reinforced concrete. Though unbuilt, the Endless House endures as a revolutionary vision of architecture as a living, evolving entity.

The Red Box Exhibition Center, designed by Mix Architecture in Nanjing, China, spans 700 m² and was completed in 2023. Nestled in Hongchuang Park at the foot of Red Mountain, this striking red concrete structure harmonizes historical, architectural, and natural elements. The red concrete symbolizes the area's past, reflecting the history of the former Nanjing Combat Machinery Factory, founded in the 1950s, and the original red brick buildings. This blend of history and nature offers a unique spatial experience that evolves over time, integrating seamlessly with its forested surroundings.

The Montreal Biosphere, designed by Buckminster Fuller for Expo 67, embodies his vision of uniting technology, nature, and society through architecture. This geodesic dome, with a 76-meter diameter and 62-meter height, utilizes icosahedral geometry and interlocking steel triangles for structural efficiency and aesthetic complexity. Originally encased in an acrylic skin, later lost in a 1976 fire, its now-exposed structure enhances its transparency, aligning with Fuller’s innovative systems thinking. A focal point of the Expo, attracting 5.3 million visitors, the Biosphere now serves as an environmental museum, honoring Fuller’s pioneering sustainable design ideals.

Santiago Calatrava, known for his sculptural approach to architecture, pointed out that architecture surpasses sculpture in its ability to engage on a larger scale. While sculpture can be admired externally, architecture surrounds and immerses the viewer, creating a full sensory experience. Calatrava's work, like the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, embodies this idea, merging art and engineering into spaces where people can walk through and interact with the structure on a monumental scale.

San Rocco House, designed by Bricolo Falsarella and completed in 2024, is a 525 m² country house in Sona, on the morainic hills of Lake Garda, Italy. Emerging from a vineyard, the house uses its material construction and sectional organization to establish a direct relationship with the geology and agricultural character of the site.

The building is organized around intersecting east–west and north–south axes and a courtyard that opens toward the landscape. At its center, a double-height dining room known as the “Room of the Three Suns” is calibrated through three openings that admit direct sunlight at different moments of the day: morning, midday, and evening. The movement of light across the rough surfaces makes solar orientation part of the spatial organization of the house.

Its walls are formed from multiple variations of exposed concrete, cast against OSB or rough timber formwork and selectively washed to reveal different textures and aggregates. Local earth and sand inform the color and composition of these “morainic walls,” establishing a material relationship with the geological strata of the surrounding hills.
