WELCOME TO JELLING CHURCH

Jelling Church is part of the monument area, which bears witness to a pivotal period in the history of Denmark. The royal line started there, the unification of the country is marked there, and this is where Denmark's official transition to Christianity during the latter half of the 10th century was seen.

The choir of the existing church dates from around 1050. The choir was formerly situated to the east of the current choir. The existing church, the main part of which dates from the 12th century, was built from travertine stone sourced from a spring south of the town.

In 1994, the Jelling monuments were added to UNESCO's list of world heritage sites because of its unique testimony to the transition of faith from Nordic religion to Christianity.

Jelling Church serves around 4,000 parishioners; however, the area is visited annually by 250,000 tourists. The church is closed during church services and church activities. As both locals and tourists appreciate the special tranquillity of the church space, they ask that you speak quietly during your visit.

Jelling was once the royal seat of the Viking kings of Denmark. It served as an important political and cultural center during the Viking Age. The presence of the Jelling stones and the Jelling Church is a testament to the significance of this place in Danish history.

The Jelling stones are particularly fascinating. They are massive granite stones with runic inscriptions and intricate carvings. These stones are considered the birth certificate of Denmark, as they commemorate the unification of Denmark and the conversion to Christianity under King Harald Bluetooth.

The Jelling Church, also known as Jelling Kirke, is an architectural gem. Built in the Romanesque style, it showcases beautiful stone carvings and houses the remains of Viking kings. The church is a symbol of the transition from paganism to Christianity in Denmark.

Aside from its historical significance, Jelling is also a picturesque town with charming landscapes. The surrounding countryside offers scenic views of rolling hills, lush green fields, and tranquil forests. It's a great place for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts to explore.

Today, Jelling continues to attract visitors from all over the world who come to experience its rich history and cultural heritage. The Jelling Museum, located nearby, provides further insights into the Viking Age and the significance of the Jelling stones. It's a must-visit for history buffs!
