WELCOME TO JELLING CHURCH
Jelling Church is part of the monument area, which bears witness to a pivotal period in the history of Denmark. The royal line started there, the unification of the country is marked there, and this is where Denmark's official transition to Christianity during the latter half of the 10th century was seen.
The choir of the existing church dates from around 1050. The choir was formerly situated to the east of the current choir. The existing church, the main part of which dates from the 12th century, was built from travertine stone sourced from a spring south of the town.
In 1994, the Jelling monuments were added to UNESCO's list of world heritage sites because of its unique testimony to the transition of faith from Nordic religion to Christianity.
Jelling Church serves around 4,000 parishioners; however, the area is visited annually by 250,000 tourists. The church is closed during church services and church activities. As both locals and tourists appreciate the special tranquillity of the church space, they ask that you speak quietly during your visit.
