Why do heatwaves matter?

Heatwaves are prolonged periods of excessively hot weather, often accompanied by high humidity, that significantly impact human health, ecosystems and infrastructure.
In Europe, they have become more frequent, hotter and long-lasting since 2000.
Southern Europe is the most affected area, which in 2024 saw the longest heatwave on record.

Despite this critical challenge becoming increasingly worse, the current policy readiness is only at medium level.

Europe's beaches and lakes are becoming safer places to swim. Recent data shows that water quality at popular swimming spots has improved over the past decade.

Between 2010 and 2024, most European bathing waters achieved "excellent" quality ratings. "Excellent" quality means the water is so clean that health risks are minimal.

Coastal areas performed better, with 81-89% of sites meeting the highest standards. Inland waters like lakes and rivers showed more variation, ranging from 60-82% excellent quality.
This improvement comes from better monitoring systems and upgraded wastewater treatment facilities.

The trend toward cleaner bathing waters reflects decades of environmental investment across Europe. As climate change intensifies weather patterns, maintaining these gains will require continued adaptation.

Key targeted for reductions and monitored under EU legislation continued to decline across most EU Member States, according to the latest data assessment.

However, reducing ammonia emissions continues to present a bigger challenge.

🌍 Today is – the date when humanity’s demand for natural resources exceeds what the planet can regenerate in a year.

The EU’s total material footprint is significantly above the global average, placing pressure on ecosystems and far surpassing the sustainable limit of resource use. If the world consumed like the EU, we would need several planets to sustain us.

📉 Reducing our material footprint is essential. This means:

▪️ Consuming less,

▪️ Choosing goods and services with lower resource demands,

▪️ Embracing circular economy principles.

The EU Circular Economy Action Plan is one step in this direction — aiming to keep materials in use for longer, increase high-quality recycling, and reduce the need for extracting new resources.

💨 Air pollution has declined — but its impacts remain deadly.
Thanks to cleaner technologies and policies, emissions have dropped in the past two decades. As a result, premature deaths from fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the EU fell by 45% between 2005 and 2022.
📉 This is progress — but not enough.
🏥 Air pollution is still the biggest environmental health risk in Europe. In 2022 alone:
• 239,000 premature deaths were linked to PM2.5
• 70,000 to ozone
• 48,000 to nitrogen dioxide

🌱 Innovation in the bioeconomy is taking root across sectors: food, construction, transport, textiles and energy.
Materials once destined for landfill are becoming building blocks for sustainable alternatives — from agricultural biomass (like husk, stover and stubble) to processed food waste.

Bio-based solutions offer key benefits:
🔄 reduced reliance on fossil fuels
💨 lower carbon footprints
♻️ support for circular practices

But these innovations demand thoughtful deployment.
Unchecked biomass extraction can strain ecosystems and threaten biodiversity.

❓ What are the safe ecological thresholds?
🥖 What will large-scale deployment mean for ecosystem services and food security?

To move forward responsibly, policies must balance growth with environmental care, support knowledge sharing, and keep long-term impacts in view.

Eutrophication – the excess of nutrients in our waters – remains a problem!

📉 While nutrient levels have dropped significantly since 1980, pollution from for example cities, industry and agriculture still fuels eutrophication in the Baltic, Black, and Greater North Seas, as well as parts of the Mediterranean.

and are the way forward! ⚡ 🔌

The last decade has seen a rapid and successful shift across all EU Member States away from fossil fuels and toward more sustainable energy sources. This is especially true for electricity, but progress has also been made in heating and transport.

As a result, greenhouse gas emissions have decreased significantly — in 2023, levels were reported to be 37% lower than in 1990 (30.5% below 2005 levels).

That said, we need to accelerate the deployment of renewables and improve energy efficiency, to increase competitiveness and fossil fuel independence. Scaling up renewable energy could also help lower costs in the long term.

What will it take to make this happen? Read our report on the topic: https://www.eea.europa.eu/en/newsroom/news/renewables-and-electrification-key-to-cutting-costs-and-powering-eus-clean-industry-and-competitiveness

Climate resilience must be fair to everyone 🤝

Today is the EU Day for Victims of the Global Climate Crisis, and we would like to share Europe's latest climate adaptation report, which emphasises that fairness and justice are fundamental for building climate resilience.

While climate impacts hit us all, vulnerable communities—older people, children, low-income families, and people with disabilities—face the harshest consequences. We must ensure they are not left behind in adaptation solutions.

The path forward requires:
🏠 Fair housing improvements & worker protection
🌱 Inclusive agriculture & food security
💧 Equitable water access for all
🚊 Transport systems that serve everyone
