Bagsiden af medaljen ved at være selvstændig og passioneret for sit fag, kan for nogle resultere i stress og det er desværre tilfældet for mig lige nu.

Mit største ønske er, at gøre en forskel for jeres skønne heste og bidrage med den viden jeg har tilegnet mig igennem de mange år i branchen.
Men det betyder også, at jeg bruger næsten alt min energi ude på besøgene i staldene rundt ved jer og fortsætter med at tænke løsninger eller rette vejledning til jeres hest efter endt besøg.

Jeg ønsker det ikke anderledes, da jeg virkelig gerne vil gøre en forskel, men jeg har også måtte erkende, at jeg skal blive bedre til at passe på mig selv.
Derfor vil jeg den næste periode have færre tider til sadelkonsultationer og bruge noget tid på at finde en kombination af min passion som sadelmager, men samtidig huske mig selv i hverdagen.

Jeg ser frem til mange flere timer i staldene rundt omkring med jeres skønne heste og håber I nyder sommeren 💜

En beretning omkring forhandling af sadler og hvordan nogle producenter agerer i hesteindustrien. Samt hvordan det påvirker hesten negativt.
Og desværre er det en industri hvor penge også har en betydning.
Men heldigvis findes der også rigtig dygtige sadelmagere der producere sadler ud fra hestens velfærd som omdrejningspunkt. Blandt andet Jeremy Rudge Saddlery Ltd der også skaber custom made sadler, men med både hest og rytter i fokus og med en forståelse for hestens anatomi og bevægelse 👏🏻

Så når du står og skal finde din næste sadel, så vær nysgerrig på sadlens pasform.

There’s been a lot of talk lately about saddle fit in the upper levels, especially the connection between back atrophy and high-end “custom” saddles that aren’t doing what they claim to do. I wanted to offer my perspective as someone who’s seen the inside of the machine. For a time, I worked as a brand rep saddle fitter for one of the major French companies, the kind that markets itself as “different,” “elite,” and “horse-first.”

It was, hands down, the most disorganized, chaotic, and ethically slippery company I’ve ever been a part of. Orders were managed on paper forms and Dropbox folders, shuffled between departments with zero accountability. Saddles regularly arrived built incorrectly. When that happened, which was often, it wasn’t seen as a crisis, it was just another day at the office. Clients would wait up to six months only to receive a saddle that didn’t match the order and didn’t fit the horse.

The training I received as a rep? Laughably minimal. We were taught how to check wither clearance, determine tree shape, and “balance” a saddle using foam inserts in the panels. No real education on biomechanics. No instruction on how saddle pressure affects movement or chronic pain. No understanding of equine spinal anatomy. And certainly no discussion of long-term horse welfare. When I mentioned learning more from independent fitters, I was told not to. Literally warned by my boss that “those people have an agenda against French brands.” She even insinuated that a certain independent fitter was the reason the last rep quit.

Management also regularly groaned about clients who wanted to have an independent fitter out at the same time as a brand fitter, labeling them as "high maintenance." It was as though questioning the company's methods was a personal affront, rather than a legitimate desire from owners for the best care for their horses.

From the beginning, I felt caught in a system that rewarded sales over ethics, obedience over insight, and pressure over compassion. I was encouraged to focus not on the horse’s well-being, but on how quickly I could convert a client’s concern into a credit card swipe. Even our elite sponsored riders, some of the most accomplished athletes in the sport, couldn’t get saddles that fit correctly. Saddles arrived wrong. Panels were lopsided. Horses were sore. We all knew the saddle could be wrong, and it often was, but the unspoken rule was to get something close enough and push it through. If they can’t be bothered to properly fit the horses that carry their name into international arenas, what makes you think they care about Pookie, your 2'6” hunter at the local shows?

We were explicitly instructed that if a client had a saddle more than a few years old, even if it was still working perfectly, we were to find something wrong with it. The goal was to sow just enough doubt to get the client to trade in the saddle and order a new custom. Not because their horse needed it, but because their wallet could support it.

That’s when it started to really wear on me. I couldn’t sleep. I would lie awake at night feeling sick: not just because we were misleading clients, but because we were hurting horses. Every day I watched animals be dismissed as “hard to fit” when the reality was that the saddle being sold to them should never have been placed on their back to begin with. The moment that broke me came at the end of winter circuit. We hadn’t met our quotas yet. The pressure was sky-high. One of the top reps began pushing saddles onto horses that visibly, obviously, did not fit. It didn’t matter that this would harm the horse over time, it mattered that the sale was made.

Perhaps the most disturbing part is the panel design we used by default, a soft, rounded latex insert, was built not to support muscle growth, but to fill the void left behind by muscle loss. Our whole system was based around accommodating atrophy, not fixing it. We had specialized modifications to make the panels more forgiving to wasted backs, as if the problem wasn’t the saddle, it was the horse’s inability to conform to it. Back atrophy wasn’t treated as a red flag. It was normalized. Built into the product line.

After six months, I started to unravel. I didn’t recognize myself anymore. I had entered the role wanting to help horses, and moved across the country to do so. I had left a steady job that I was happy in thinking this would be a way to combine my skills and my passion. I found myself trapped in a toxic cycle of moral compromise. Eventually, I couldn’t fake it anymore, especially since I had begun my equine bodywork certifications. I told my boss I was done. I remember saying, half-joking, half-begging for her to understand, that “I’m not making enough money to cry every night.” “That’s just part of the job,” she responded.

That was a year ago. Since then, two more reps have cycled through my old territory.

So if your high-end “custom” saddle doesn’t fit… if your “fitter” keeps blaming your pads or your horse’s shape… if your horse’s back is getting worse instead of better: you are not crazy, and you’re not alone. You’ve been caught in a system that was never built to prioritize your horse’s health in the first place.

This isn’t just a string of bad luck. It’s systemic. It’s built into the model. These brands don’t invest in education. They invest in optics. They train salespeople, not fitters. And they sell you the idea of customization while relying on generic templates and pressure tactics behind the scenes.

I’m not saying every brand rep is malicious. Some are kind, well-meaning, and genuinely doing their best within a rigged game. But when you pay someone a tiny base salary and dangle their entire livelihood on commissions, it creates a perfect storm of pressure and desperation. Good intentions don’t last long when survival depends on making the sale. That’s why I left. That’s why I speak up. That’s why I’ll keep urging riders to work with independent fitters: people who don’t make a commission off the brand, who aren’t beholden to a sales quota, who care more about your horse’s comfort than the label on the flap.

That’s why I walked away. I couldn’t keep selling saddles that were hurting horses and gaslighting riders into believing it was fine. I couldn’t sleep knowing I was complicit in their pain. So if something in your gut has been telling you this isn’t right, listen. Trust it. Ask questions. Get a second opinion. Seek out an independent saddle fitter whose only loyalty is to your horse’s well-being, not a sales quota. You deserve transparency. You deserve honesty. Your horse deserves comfort, freedom, and a fighting chance to thrive: not just survive under eight thousand dollars of leather and lies. Don’t let the system convince you this is normal. It’s not, and the more of us who speak up, the harder it becomes for them to keep pretending it is.

Hver gang jeg kommer ud til en sadel konsultation, vurderes gjordens pasform til hesten.
Det har fået mig til at tænke over, om du som hesteejer er opmærksom på gjordens vedligeholdelse.

Billederne her i opslaget viser gjorde som er i brug, men burde være udskiftet. Og hvorfor det?

Alle 3 gjorde er så slidte i materialet, at de kan forårsage gjordsår og ubehag på hesten.
Når læderet eller kunstmaterialet begynder at sprække, vil materialet være hårdt og ufleksibelt grundet misvedligeholdt eller opslidt gjord.
Derfor er det vigtigt at tørre gjorden over med en fugtig klud efter brug, så snavs og sved ikke får lov til at blive siddende.
💪🏼 et godt fif kan være at have en fugtig karklud i en tillukket pose i striglekassen. Så er den klar til brug direkte når du sadler af (husk at skylle kulden, så den er klar til brug igen efter næste ridetur).

Gjorde med lammeskind skal også vedligeholdes og dette gøres bedst med vask. Pas på med at børste lanmeskindsgjorden med en karte, da det kan beskadige pelsen mere end at være gavnligt.

Derfor en opfordring til at gennemgå din gjord (og andet udstyr) jævnligt.

Ved udgangen af april har jeg fået et nyt redskab med mig, der muliggør at vurdere asymmetri i hestens bevægelse.
RealHorse er en app udviklet af danske dyrlæger, der kortlægger hestens bevægelse ned i detaljer som kan være svært for øjet at se. På den måde kan man opdage haltheder eller andre udfordringer i bevægelsen.

Men hvorfor er det så relevant for en sadelmager at bruge?

Jo, når jeg kommer ud til heste hvor sadlen glider skævt, i fagsprog kaldt saddleslip, er det påvist, at der er en større sandsynlighed for, at hesten ikke bruger sig symmetrisk. Denne manglende symmetri i hestens bevægelse kan forårsage saddleslip.

Derfor er det vigtigt at få belyst hvor den reelle udfordring er. Er sadlen det primære eller sekundære problem og hvordan kommer vi bedst videre.
Med realhorse appen kan jeg få svar på ovenstående indenfor få minutter og der kan lægges en plan for det videre forløb med hesteejeren.

Det er svært dagligt ikke at blive præsenteret for nye billeder eller overskrifter omkring brugen af vores heste i sporten.
De der kender mig godt ved hestens velfærd, står mit hjerte meget nært. Nogle har sågar hørt mig udtale, at jeg først og fremmest er der for at hjælpe hesten og udbrede kendskabet til hestens adfærd og udfordringer relateret særligt til sadler.

Nogle gange kan jeg ikke undgå at tænke, om sadlen er et redskab i ridningen, som modarbejder hesten mere end den gør gavn. Men så husker jeg på de velfungerende heste, jeg også ser med afspændte overlinjer og god bevægelse. Det er muligt at gøre sadlen til et redskab i ridningen, der arbejder med hesten og fremmer hestens opbygning af en stærk og sund overlinje samt giver mulighed for en sund bevægelse.

Når det er sagt findes der desværre også en stor andel sadel producenter, der må formodes enten grundet uvidenhed eller finansielle interesser lancerer sadler, der direkte arbejder imod hestens sunde muskulatur og dermed giver store udfordringer for hesten. Disse producenter henvender sig primært til rytterens komfort og har derfor en betydelig markedsandel i heste industrien.

Det kan være utrolig svært som hesteejer at navigere i sadel markedet og med god grund. Alle sadel producenter skriver det rigtige på deres sider og promovere sig som det bedste valg for ekvipagen. Lige her ser jeg det som min fornemmeste opgave at navigere i det for dig og hjælpe dig hen til den rette sadel for både dig og hesten, uafhængigt af sadel producentens navn eller popularitet.

Endnu en opfordring om at vurdere sadlen i bevægelse med rytter.
Uanset erfaring som sadelmager så kan vi ikke få det fulde billede af sadlens interaktion med hest og rytter, uden at se den i brug.
Så derfor stil krav som hesteejer. Det er ikke sikkert det kan mærkes muskulært på hesten endnu, at der er et problem med sadlen eller at du som rytter er bevidst om dette. Derfor kan vi som sadelmager få så brugbar en viden med i vurderingen af sadlen, når den ses i ridningen. Og tænk hvis vi kan løse problemet før det bliver så slemt at hesten får spændinger eller ømheder i sadellejet.

What do you do when you buy a pair of shoes? You select the shoes of choice, try them on and then have a little walk around in them to see how they feel and fit. You wouldn’t purchase a pair of shoes without trying them on and walking in them first. We should afford the same level of detail to our horse’s saddle fit when purchasing a new saddle, or having an existing saddle refitted.

“One of my concerns is that there is a belief that you can fit a saddle statically (without riding), and from an evidence-based perspective, that doesn’t make any sense,” says Russell MacKechnie-Guire. “A saddle that looks in balance statically can behave very differently when it is girthed up, has the weight of a rider and the movement of the horse underneath it. Riders need to ensure that they are present/able to ride for a saddle fitting assessment as riders can’t expect their saddle fitter to make an informed, reliable decision based on the horse stood in the stable.

“We know that lateral saddle slip occurs during motion, particularly in walk and canter and only on one rein and there is no way you can get that level of information from just looking at the saddle on the horse in the stable.”

Russell advises that if you’re having a saddle fit done and the saddle fitter doesn’t request that you are seen ridden in the saddle, you should go as far as terminating that assessment; “it is not acceptable to be able to determine the fit of a saddle without seeing it being ridden in and tested under the conditions in which it is going to be used,” he adds. “So, that should be walk, trot and canter on both reins including circles in a dressage saddle and similarly in a jump saddle but with the added bit of actually jumping in the saddle too. The saddle fitter should stand in the middle of the arena to see the side, front-to-back balance and then in the corner on the long side to see the left-to-right balance. I would advise saddle fitters to use smart phone technology to reinforce what they are seeing providing they conform to GDPR with videos.”

There are rare occasions when you can’t ride the horse during a saddle fitting such as if a horse is recovering from injury that prevents it from being ridden, and if the horse is young and unbacked, but otherwise, every saddle-fitting should include a ridden assessment. Owners need to be mindful of this and challenge the saddle fitter if they say they don’t need to see you ride in it.

“Good saddle fitters should automatically ask you to ride in your saddle, and if they don’t it should be a red flag,” says Russell. “You are paying a reasonable amount of money for a saddle and for the fitting, so you want to know that you are getting a thorough assessment to ensure optimal back health. Given what we know with the affect that saddle fit, design and balance can have on the horse, we are incumbent to ensure that we employ the most detailed possible assessment to ensure the best chances of optimal back health with saddle fit.

“We really must work with our qualified saddle fitters in fitting saddles and avoid the temptation of buying online and fitting by a video or pictures or not at all because the hands-on skills that a qualified saddle fitter have are invaluable to ensuring and safeguarding the horse.”

We all have a duty to safeguard our horses and part of that duty comes discussions. Horse owners need to feel empowered that they can have that relationship with their team to ask that question.

“If your saddle fitter says they don’t need to see you ride in it and you feel uncomfortable demanding that they do, you could say that you want to check that the saddle is comfortable for you as a way out of a confrontational discussion,” advises Russell.

Historically, saddles have been fitted to a horse without a pad or numnah underneath, but thoughts on this have changed.

“It’s fine to see a saddle on the horse without a numnah as a baseline visual, but it’s also important to see it with the equipment that the rider will be using with the saddle because your numnah might have an extra layer of wool which may make the saddle fit differently,” says Russell. “A saddle should be fitted with the girth, pad and any other equipment that will be used. It’s a fit to perform test.”

If you’re having a brand-new saddle fitted, you will go through the same fitting procedure (as a refit) of a static and dynamic assessment, but after an eight to twelve week window to allow the flocking to ‘bed-down’, your saddle fitter should come back to reassess the fit and make any necessary adjustments.
