Before Scatman: Early Sessions is out February 26th.

Most of the world remember John Larkin as Scatman John, the 52-year-old pop star who turned his stutter into the global Eurodance hits of the mid-90s. But long before he topped the charts, Larkin was a serious jazz pianist deeply embedded in the US West Coast jazz scene. With a new release of a limited 10" vinyl, we want to showcase John Larkin as the dedicated musician he was long before he became the Scatman.

The EP Before Scatman: Early Sessions features four original compositions written and performed by Larkin, recorded in Newport Beach in 1978 - eighteen years prior to his pop breakthrough, documenting a period when Larkin was touring as a scatting jazz pianist.

The vinyl is released in the wake of the official biography Scatman John The Remarkable Story of the World's Unlikeliest Popstar written by Gina Waggott. The book describes John Larkin - a fast-living, hard-playing, stuttering jazz pianist, who overcame abuse, addiction, ageism, and obscurity to stage one of the most improbable debuts in pop music history by turning his greatest pain into his purpose.

Based on rare archives and interviews with those who knew him best, this authorized biography is a redemptive, deeply human story of struggle, heartbreak, and triumph. For anyone who's ever felt like an outsider, this book inspires with a powerful message: your deepest fear can become your greatest strength, and your pain can become your purpose.

Yesterday marked the anniversary of John Paul Larkin’s passing, you probably know him as Scatman John.
He lived a turbulent life filled with incredible highs and very low lows, and next year his story will be told in even greater depth. On February 5th, 2026, his authorized biography, written by the incredible Gina Waggott, will be released.
