Happy 30th Birthday to Scatman’s World! 🎹🎼
One of the most unusual and best-selling albums of the 90s, Scatman’s World was a concept album that described the utopian vision of “Scatland” - a place where only peace, love, and harmony exist.
Scatman John - real name John Larkin - was a survivor of an abusive and traumatic childhood, and was deeply ashamed of his stutter. He knew firsthand that the world wasn’t always safe for kids, so he created one. He spent days writing the liner notes. “I dedicate this album to all who have problems, living in a confused world,” he began, “which includes those of us who stutter.”
Music was John’s safe space that he wanted to share with others. Scatland was his metaphor for the inner child, ready to be rediscovered and nurtured if you chose to look. Some critics scoffed and made fun of him - this was the 90s, after all - but John didn’t care. He knew who he was reaching, and why.
“As long as you need me, I will be here for you,” he concluded. “You are all my children”.
Though John died in 1999, he kept his promise. 30 years on, the album is still here for the misfits, the ashamed, the traumatized, the kids-at-heart, or anyone who just needs a little encouragement. It's full of bangers, too. So we wish a big 30th Birthday to Scatman’s World - still s**tting, still healing, and still here.
