Astronomical summer officially begins as the June solstice delivers the longest day and shortest night of the year to the Northern Hemisphere.
The official transition to astronomical summer takes place at exactly 4:24 a.m. EDT on Sunday, June 21, 2026, as Earth reaches the June solstice. While the exact astronomical moment passes without a dramatic sky show, its impact is felt throughout the day. Much of North America will experience its longest day and shortest night of the entire year, with the Sun carving its highest, longest path across the sky. The length of daylight varies dramatically by region, stretching from a generous 15 to 16 hours across the northern United States to nearly 20 hours in parts of Alaska and northern Canada. For communities above the Arctic Circle, the Sun will not set at all, creating the breathtaking phenomenon of the midnight Sun.
Contrary to the common misconception that summer is caused by Earth orbiting closer to the Sun, the season is actually driven by the planet’s constant 23.5-degree axial tilt.
