While many are rushing to snag the best Black Friday deals, my family is keeping up a tradition that started 24 years ago.

When my boys were little, their dad and I would wake up at 4 AM to shop the sales and be back in time to get them dressed for a magical day at Downtown Disney (now Disney Springs). Over the years, this day has become about more than just holiday shopping—it’s a day for family, laughter, and creating memories that we’ll cherish forever.

This year, my son’s new family is joining the fun, and I couldn’t be more excited to see our tradition grow.

I’m reminded how grateful I am to work for myself, setting my own hours so I can prioritize what matters most: these special moments with my loved ones. If I had almost any other job, I’d likely be at work today instead of celebrating with the people I love.

This Thanksgiving, I’m especially thankful for my family—for their support, their love, and the joy they bring into my life.

I’m also feeling gratitude for my son’s new in-laws and the little girl we’ll soon welcome into the family—my granddaughter! At the same time, it’s a bittersweet holiday for me. My youngest son has just started a 6-9 month residential care program to get the mental health support he needs. It’s been a long road, and while I’m heartbroken he’ll miss the winter holidays and his birthday in March, I’m so thankful he’s taking this step toward healing.

What I’m most grateful for is the flexibility I’ve built into my work. Visiting hours for his program are only Monday through Thursday at 2 PM—an impossible time for most working parents. But because I make my own schedule, I’ll be able to see him and support him when he needs me most.

Life is full of ups and downs, and this Thanksgiving, I’m reminded of how precious family is and how important it is to have the freedom to show up for them.

This Thanksgiving, I’m reflecting on just how grateful I am for the life we’ve built—a life where I can prioritize what truly matters.

If I worked for someone else, today might look very different. My son is currently in a residential mental health facility, and visiting hours are only between 2-3 PM, Monday through Thursday. Most employers wouldn’t allow three hours away in the middle of the day every week.

But because we’ve built businesses that run on autopilot, my husband and I worked a few hours this morning, hopped in the car to visit our son, and I even took a Zoom call on the drive. We spent an hour with him—an hour we might not have had otherwise—and were back before dinner.

I’m thankful for the flexibility we’ve created and the freedom it provides. It’s not just about earning—it’s about living.
