The United Kingdom, Australia and Canada on Sunday formally recognised the State of Palestine, marking a major diplomatic shift by three of Israel’s closest Western allies.
Leaders in London, Canberra and Ottawa said the decision was intended to bolster efforts toward a two-state solution and to help end the conflict in Gaza. All three governments stressed that recognition comes with expectations of governance reforms from the Palestinian Authority, including elections and the exclusion of Hamas from leadership.
Israeli officials condemned the move as a “reward for terrorism,” warning it would undermine peace efforts and embolden militant groups. The United States, which has not recognised Palestine, also expressed objections, saying such recognition should come only after a negotiated settlement.
The recognition was welcomed by the Palestinian Authority, which hailed it as a step toward international legitimacy. Diplomats suggested the coordinated announcement was timed to build momentum ahead of discussions at the United Nations General Assembly this week, where other countries — including France, Portugal and Malta — may follow suit.
The joint decision by three key allies of Israel is expected to increase international pressure on the Israeli government to engage in renewed peace talks, though analysts warn it could also deepen diplomatic rifts with Washington and harden Israeli opposition.
