I wasn't expecting the dry micro climate in the Gulf of Nicoya. Cacti are common and it turns out my favourite islands (Isla Pajaros) during our 7 day trip were covered in them. At low tide this island offered turquise blue ocean, white sand and the most interesting rock formations.
