Sound designer Yeong min Son quit learning C after one week - "I'm just not gifted at coding," he told us. A year later, he built his own VST plugin in two days: a vectorscope that solos individual frequency bands, right inside the panel he keeps on screen all day. He's already using it in his work.

Most microphones haven't really changed in design for fifty years. The BAROm1 is what happens when someone refuses to accept that.
Built by hand by Japanese engineer and producer Yasushi Utsunomia β€” known in Japan's experimental scene as a "magician of recording" β€” the BAROm1 is a "barometer-microphone." It responds to changes in air pressure down to 0.1 Hz: sound so low it can't even be played back through speakers.
The point isn't to hear that bass. It's headroom. Just as field recordists prize 192 kHz to capture ultrasound for extreme processing, the BAROm1 captures the opposite end β€” infrasound and pressure β€” so that when you slow a recording down or pitch it up, you get organic weight and presence instead of a synthetic "boom" layered on top.
An inexpensive omni capsule in an acrylic housing, paired with a simple pocket recorder, somehow delivering a sound that feels physically present in the room.

The microphone that doesn't listen to air.
Rare Waves' OCM-2 Stereo Photophone is a fundamentally different kind of audio transducer. Instead of capturing sound waves, it reads vibrations from surfaces using reflected infrared light β€” producing stereo recordings of things no conventional microphone can touch: water ripples, spinning tape mechanisms, cymbal edges mid-vibration.
The result is something between a contact mic and a scientific instrument. It's immune to room noise, requires no acoustic treatment, and captures a stereo image from a single unit. The physics behind it trace back to Alexander Graham Bell's 1880 photophone β€” which he considered a greater invention than the telephone.
