The origins of the strange word "Yuletide". A favorite time for pandas.

Yule came to us because Old English borrowed Old Norse's 'jol', and made it 'geola' which was a heathen feast. For Anglo-Saxons it eventually came to signify the two-month winter season corresponding to the Roman December and January, but by then it was known as 'giuli'. When Anglo-Saxons were Christianized it narrowed to only mean the 12-day feast of the nativity beginning with December 25th. By the 11th century it only meant Christmas day. The word fell out of regular use for a few hundred years. In the 19th century it was revived by writers to signify The Christmas of Merry England (with an emphasis on the Merry part) because apparently Old French also borrowed Old Norse 'jol' - making it 'jolif', which became Modern French's 'joli' - meaning pretty, nice, and festive - British writers apparently merged these meanings. The first reference to a yule log is in the 17th century.

On to 'Tide' - in Old English it was 'tid', which meant a point or portion of time. It was a period, a season, the time that something was due, a feast day or a canonical hour. This came from Proto-Germanic 'tidiz', which simply meant a division of time.

A policeman in the big city stops a man in a car with a miniature panda in the front seat. "What are you doing with that panda?" He shouts, "You should take it to the zoo." The following week, the same policeman sees the same man with the panda again in the front seat, with both of them wearing sunglasses. The policeman pulls him over. "I thought you were going to take that panda to the zoo!" The man says, "I did. We had such a good time we are going to the beach this weekend!"

ONE THOUSAND pandas typing on one thousand typewriters may never accidentally write the works of Shakespeare...but they could edit them. Watch closely:

ORIGINAL:

To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.

PANDA:

To yourself be true, and just as day follows night, you can then be false to no man.

“Let’s face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren’t invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn’t the plural of booth beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn’t it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn’t preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which an alarm goes off by going on. English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race (which, of course, isn’t a race at all). That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

And finally, why doesn't "buick" rhyme with "quick"?”

Panda Dinner Etiquette:

A Panda bear goes to a restaurant. He orders a meal and eats it. After paying for his meal, he pulls out a gun and shoots it in the air. He immediately walks out the door.

"Why did you do that?" hollers the confused waitress.

The panda says, "I'm a panda. Look it up in the dictionary."

The waitress finds a dictionary and searches for the definition of Panda Bear. Finding it, she reads, "Panda Bear - a large black and white bear, native to the far east. Eats shoots and leaves."
