Can a single vowel mark completely change the meaning of a word?
Take a look at these two examples:
๐ ููุชูุจู ุงูุทุงูุจู ุงูุฏุฑุณู. (The student wrote the lesson.)
๐ ููุชูุจู ุงููุบุฉ ุงูุนุฑุจูุฉ ู
ููุฏุฉู. (Arabic books are useful.)
The letters are exactly the same:
ู โ ุช โ ุจ
But the meaning is completely different!
In the first sentence:
โ๏ธ ููุชูุจู (kataba) = a verb meaning "wrote"
In the second sentence:
๐ ููุชูุจ (kutub) = the plural of "book" meaning "books"
This is one of the unique features of Arabic:
โจ Small vowel marks are not just pronunciation guides. They can completely change the meaning and function of a word.
A change in vowels can turn:
๐น A verb into a noun
๐น A singular word into a plural word
๐น One meaning into a completely different meaning
That's why learning correct pronunciation and vowel patterns is so important when studying Arabic.
๐ฌ Can you think of another Arabic word that changes meaning when the vowels change?
