The Roman Odeon was built in 21 BCE when Taormina became a military colony under the first Roman emperor, Augustus.
With a capacity of less than 200 people, it was reserved for only the elite of the City who came to enjoy musical and literary performances.
Before it was accidentally found in 1892, the Odeon had long been forgotten.

In a few days I'll be visiting Pompeii, where one of the best-preserved temples of Isis was discovered.

For the past several months, Traveling Through Antiquity has focused on the wonders of Egypt through my own photographs and travels. In a few days, the journey continues across the Mediterranean.

I'll be spending four days in Naples, visiting the National Archaeological Museum, Pompeii, and Herculaneum, before heading to Sicily for a month to explore Greek and Roman sites.

Along the way I'll be sharing original photographs, historical context, and comparisons with the ancient world of Egypt.

If you've enjoyed following the temples, tombs, museums, and monuments of Egypt, I hope you'll continue the journey with me as we explore the wider world of antiquity.

Which site would you most like to see first: Pompeii, Herculaneum, Syracuse, Agrigento, or Segesta?

Have you ever wondered how the ancient Egyptians carved entire tombs out of solid rock?

This short video from the Tomb of Ay in South Amarna captures a fascinating moment frozen in time. On the right, you can clearly see where the workers had just begun cutting a new doorway and chamber, starting at the top and gradually working their way downward—a technique that reveals exactly how these magnificent underground monuments were created.

As the camera pans to the left, you'll see beautifully finished columns and another doorway that still leads nowhere. Why? Because the chamber beyond had not yet been excavated. The tomb was abandoned before the work could be completed, leaving us with a rare glimpse of an ancient construction site exactly as the craftsmen left it more than 4,000 years ago.

These unfinished details are among the most valuable clues to understanding ancient Egyptian engineering and tomb-building techniques.

Have you ever noticed unfinished features like these in Egyptian tombs or temples?
