Last month we had the pleasure of working with Sony Japan and Stink Films in producing their latest commercial in Morocco for their upcoming game changing new product. It was a truly international affair, with a cast and crew from Japan, Morocco, Egypt, the US, and France.

We helped facilitate the shoot in various cities and locations across Morocco, providing the necessary camera gear, equipment, crew, transportation, accommodation, security, and permits, and a mixed cast of local and French actors and models.

Watch out for a beautifully shot commercial and a ground peaking product from Sony coming out soon.

The beauty of working in the MENA region is having the ability to film in magnificent ancient sites. Locations and monuments that have been around for thousands of years. Whether it's the Pyramids of Giza, the Ancient temples of Luxor, Mount Sinai, Wadi Rum, Petra in Jordan, or the Chellah Necropolis in Morocco, filming there in person allows the filmmaker to capture a special authenticity and richness that can never be replicated by CGI.

Even for the actors, being in such locations, knowing that on this land where they preform, and maybe on this specific spot where they stand, pharaohs walked, prophets lived, Alexander the Great conquered, Cesar and his Roman legions fought, and mankind built great human civilizations that rose and fell. Just being in these locations help actors channel the energy and history of where they stand to better inhabit their characters.

Star Wars, an adventure made in Tunisia.

Before CGI and virtual studios, filmmakers had two choices, either build a set on a sound stage or film in actual locations. Many cinematic film masters chose the latter, including David Lean, John Ford, Akira Kurisawa and many more. And from 1977 to 1999 George Lucas chose for his exterior shots to take his cast and crew to Tunisia where he created exotic planets and aliens which have now become part of pop culture and cinematic history.

Some of the locations used in the original Star Wars films:

- Om Jamal – The most visited still preserved location of the space saga. The location served as the backdrop for the space town “Mos Espa” in Episode I, The Phantom Menace 1999.

- Lar’s homestead – The white dome house served as the outside backdrop for Luke Skywalker’s home in Episode IV, A New Hope 1977.

- Ksar Ouled Soltane – It was the backdrop for the slave quarters in which the young Anakin Skywalker lived with his mother. Episode I, The Phantom Menace” 1999.

- The village of Ajim on the Tunisian Island of Djebra – Was the backdrop for the space city “Mos Eisley”.

- La Grande Dune – Episode IV: A New Hope when C3PO and R2D2 crash land into a giant dune. Aptly named La Grande Dune is that dune.

- Hotel Sidi Driss – Was the Interior backdrop for Luke Skywalker home in Episode IV: A New Hope.

Chouara Tannery (sometimes spelled Chouwara) is one of the three tanneries in the city of Fez, Morocco. Tanning is the process of treating skins and hides of animals to produce leather. A tannery is the place where the skins are processed.

Chouara Tannery is the largest tannery in the city and one of the oldest. It is located in the Fes el Bali, the oldest medina quarter of the city, near the Saffarin Madrasa along the Oued Fes (also known as the Oued Bou Khrareb). Since the inception of the city, the tanning industry has been continually operating in the same fashion as it did in the early centuries. You might have also caught a glimpse of it in The Bourne Identity.

Few contemporary filmmakers have the ability to adapt real locations and morph them into stunning visual tableau’s like Wes Anderson does. In his latest feature 'The French Dispatch' set in late 50’s/early 60’s Paris, he does just that. For his main location he chose Angoulême in the west of France – a small and relatively obscure town. The town is known as ‘La Ville de l’Image’, the town is a national center for animation and video games, with more than 30 studios in the area. It also offers a fine selection of winding streets with the ambience of a Nouvelle Vague classic.

Anderson spent six months on site and used 900 locals as extras, as well as employing crew from the area. For interiors, the team was based at the disused Cofpa felt factory at nearby Gond-Pontouvre, but also shot all over town.
