Third movie made by the participants of our training as part of the AMEA fellowship to break stigma on mental health and substance use in refugee communities.
This short documentary called ‘Restoring Dry Soil’. It highlights the experience of addiction and how it impacts not only the person struggling with it, the relationships with those around them, and the journey towards healing. The film also follows the journey of individuals who have recovered through support groups and rehabilitation.

Second Movie made by the participants of our training as part of the AMEA fellowship to break stigma on mental health and substance use in refugee communities.

In this episode, young voices open up about the stigma and silence surrounding mental health in refugee and immigrant communities. Too often, they are told to “be grateful” or “stay strong” — but real strength is found in speaking up, breaking the silence, and supporting one another.

Through their stories, they show that with understanding and safe spaces, youth can turn struggle into strength and lead change for a better future. 🌟

First film where the participants in the training share moments when they felt unseen — and the powerful feeling of being truly seen and heard.

Have you ever felt invisible because of a part of your identity, or maybe the stigma around your struggles? Maybe it’s cultural, where it just isn’t talked about, or maybe people just don’t notice.

Our youth fellows from the AMEA “Scene and Heard” Fellowship open up about their identities, and the moments they don’t feel recognized, and what they feel when they do feel seen and heard. The stigma around mental health and substance use can make people feel uncared for and insignificant. This causes them to suffer in silence, when everyone deserves to feel seen and heard. What makes you feel seen and heard?

Celebrating a Journey of Storytelling, Creativity, and Change 🌟
Over the past 21 days, I had the privilege of working with 9 incredible young people from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Mexico in the AMEA Summer Fellowship, funded by SDRCC.

Through the Storytelling Club, Photography, and Filmmaking workshops, these participants learned to speak up, tell their stories, and use their voices to challenge stigma and stereotypes around mental health and substance use in refugee communities.

They didn’t just learn skills — they created! Together, they produced 3 short films and 9 social media reels that carry powerful messages from the heart.

I believe youth are not just our future — they are our better future. When we give them a safe space and the right tools, they can inspire change, heal wounds, and move hearts.

🎬 Stay tuned! We’ll be sharing the participants’ films here very soon — you won’t want to miss them.
