Al-Mouled Al-Nabawy (the Birth of Prophet Mohammed), also called Moulid El Nabi, falls on the 12th day of the third month of the Islamic calendar, Rabi’i Al-Awal (In 2023, it took place from the 26th - 27th September)
While celebrations differ among Muslims around the world, the birth date of the Prophet is a national holiday in several Islamic countries. Muslims celebrate it as a commemoration of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, rather than as an Eid or worship.
Traditions of Al-Mouled Al-Nabawy
In the weeks before the event, stores begin selling "Halawet Al-Mouled", Middle Eastern sweets usually made from different types of nuts and honey.
Another tradition peculiar to Egypt is the "Arouset Al-Mouled" (Al-Mouled Doll), which is a bride-shaped doll sold to children in different sizes and shapes.
Popular celebrations of the Prophet's birthday begin in some countries at the beginning of the month of Rabi' al-Awwal and end at the end of the month, with gatherings in which poems praising the Prophet are sung, lessons from his biography are given, and praise and prayers are given to him.
