In this interview, Jamal Haidar (University of Paris I, Pantheon-Sorbonne, Paris) draws our attention to the three main challenges he has been experiencing as other southern researchers. First, it is extremely hard to access data from southern countries especially Arab countries. Second, there is a lack of funding in the Arab world to PHD students as well as young researchers to attend international conferences. Last but not least, he expresses his concern towards the issue that most southern researchers focus on the quantity rather quality of the research. Thus, he suggests that there should be some supervision on the quality of southern research in order to have more sound policy implications.

EuroMeSCo Paper 20: Demands of the Egyptian Revolution and the Newly-Emerging Actors
by Mohamed El-Agati

This paper by Mohamed El-Agati (Arab Forum for Alternatives) discusses the most popular demands that lead to the outbreak of the Revolution in Egypt, which can be summarized under the claim for bread, freedom, social justice and dignity. The paper also presents the main actors of the Egyptian political arena during the Revolution and those who are currently heading the political scene. It analyses the commitment of the political actors to the implementation of the revolutionary demands and observes that although these actors expressed first a strong desire to support the necessary reforms, they have gradually abandoned the most popular issues. The Syria Effect in Lebanon: Join the Search On Air

"The war in Syria smolders on, three years later. Over 11,000 children are dead. One million refugees have flooded over the border into tiny neighbor Lebanon, a country of only four million people to begin with. The huge refugee influx is taxing resources like jobs, housing, schools, water, and electricity.

Though many have rushed to address humanitarian needs, tensions are rising between refugees and host communities. Molotov cocktails launched into refugee shelters, threats of eviction, and other widespread acts of discrimination expose how quickly these conflicts could flare into violence.

We'll hear from a Syrian refugee about the situation on the ground. Emily Jacquard, Country Director for Search for Common Ground in Lebanon, will discuss their work in eleven communities to disperse rumors and strengthen the abilities of refugees and Lebanese to resolve conflicts together, without violence.
You will not want to miss this. We’ll be taking your questions live!"

FREE Webinar: Never mind the research piece! Communicating in policy environments
March 18 at 2 p.m. GMT- join a FREE webinar by Politics&Ideas and CIPPEC (with the support of GDNet) on how to re-think our current focus in research communications. We will propose to de-centre it from the research work and instead focus on the context of policy and politics.

During one hour and a half Vanesa Weyrauch (Co-founder of Politics&Ideas and Associate Researcher of the Center for the Implementation of Public Policies promoting Equity and Growth-CIPPEC) will share new reflections that take into account the multilayered and multi-actoral nature of research communications. Then Rebecca Pointer (Information and Communications Officer at Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies-PLAAS, South Africa) and René Hernández (Director of Communications at Fundación Salvadoreña para el Desarrollo Económico y Social-FUSADES, El Salvador) will also share their experiences and thinking about how we can become better at communicating for and within public policies.

This webinar will be useful for anyone thinking about how to strategize communicationsto enhance the way it helps research contribute to policy.

Those interested in the Webinar need to fill the following form: https://es.surveymonkey.com/s/255YF9S

The first 25 applicants will be considered for participation in the Webinar. Applicants will receive a notification by March 6th, with further instructions regarding the Webinar.

Requirements: participants only need to have a good bandwidth. However, some tests may be done before the Webinar.

If you have further queries, please send an e mail to Leandro Echt: [email protected].

To address the many challenges that researchers in the Global South face when communicating within policy environments in which they are often regarded as external stakeholders, Politics&Ideas and CIPPEC have jointly developed new reflections that take into account its multilayered and multi-act...
