We are an Egypt-based media organization interested in producing intelligent and engaging journalism, and more generally in re-examining the role of media in relation to its public. Working at Mada are a group of journalists and business developers based in Cairo. While we all have experience in media and business development in Egypt and around the world, we also have links to diverse fields incl

uding the arts, creative writing, social development, youth work, education, human rights, medicine and finance. We began mostly women, but after three years of life are about half men and half women. Mada is the Arabic word for span or scope, which is the field of coverage we want to construct and reconstruct. It is also an old word for the groove holding the stone of a gem in its setting — a symbol of the act of taking a position.”

Fatma Abu Zayd was seven months pregnant, and asleep, when Israeli bombardments blew her apartment door off of its hinges in Gaza City last December. The incident forced Fatma and her husband and two children into displacement. The family currently resides in a tent in Rafah, where Fatma welcomed Mada Masr as she tended to her makeshift home, and told us about bringing her baby girl Eileen into the world under impossible conditions.

📸 | Panorama Mada Masr | Life’s many hardships in Rafah

Tightly-packed tents fill the city of Rafah at the Gaza Strip's southern tip, with UNRWA estimating that the city's 55 square kilometers now host around 1.5 million people, over six times its resident population. Forcefully displaced from brick-and-mortar homes to cloth and plastic tents, Palestinians who were spared fatal Israeli military operations nonetheless struggle for survival.

In tents pitched on streets, sidewalks, schools, NGO properties and public land, Palestinians in Gaza meet essential life needs with great hardship. There is a lack of basic foodstuffs, water, means for cooking and heating, and infrastructure for sanitation. Starting early in the morning and until sunset, they queue in long lines to keep their children alive by procuring a gallon of water, some bread, or a free meal prepared by charities in limited amounts. Lines also extend outside the tin bathrooms that are set up to serve numbers beyond their capacity. Clothes and dishes are washed in the most primitive of ways, with people crouched over humble buckets of rationed water.

After repeated settler attacks on Khirbet Zanuta in the Occupied West Bank, Israeli settlers forced residents to evacuate their homes last October under the threat of being killed. On January 31, activists monitored settlers fencing off the forcibly evacuated Palestinian land in the South Hebron Hills.

Mada Masr visited one of Khirbet Zanuta's former residents in his place of refuge to speak about the community's forced displacement, a pattern that has noticeably increased across the West Bank since last October, according to the on-the-ground monitoring of B'Tselem, the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories.

As the Rapid Support Forces continue to push southward, the rebel group launched an attack on Dalang, the second largest city in South Kordofan, an agricultural hub that guarantees the food security of thousands and a gateway linking the east and west of the state. The battle for Dalang has forged a temporary alliance between the military and the SPLM-N led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu, as the latter deployed troops to the city in coordination with the Armed Forces, a military source in the city told Mada Masr.

Reminding each other of Palestine

The importance of the Palestinian liberation cause has never been a matter of question for the general Egyptian populace. Focus on it has simply intensified or diminished depending on the current developments on the ground. Since October 7, attention to Palestine, and especially to Gaza, has soared, given the extreme significance of that day’s events and those that followed it. Egyptian cafés began providing constant television coverage of the situation in Gaza. Café patrons and passersby alike followed these screens until returning home to watch the news unfold on their own television sets. In addition to satellite coverage, social media platforms became nearly instant sources of dissemination for unbearable scenes of destruction and massacres that have caused Egyptians, like many others around the world, much pain to witness.

As the situation grew rapidly worse, with war crimes against the people of Gaza committed one after the next, the bombing of the Ahli Arab Baptist Hospital on October 17 provoked extreme and widespread anger. University students across the nation demonstrated, hoisting Palestinian flags and chanting in solidarity with the people of Gaza. In tandem with state-sanctioned demonstrations, wide-ranging sectors of society independently took to the streets to express their support for the cause. In Alexandria, one protest sign showed Biden and Netanyahu splattered with blood, a symbolic representation of the war crimes they had committed in Gaza. These popular demonstrations were short-lived and somewhat haphazard, yet authentically represented the people’s churning anger.

As Israel’s war on Gaza continued, and opportunities to provide effective support for Palestine remained minimal, people began expressing symbolic solidarity. This came from a sense of responsibility to speak up for the oppressed, as well as a means to express their feelings. After a lengthy disappearance, the Palestinian flag assumed a prominent place in public spaces, hung from homes and shopfronts, and cruising the streets on vehicles of all kinds. It has even made a strong appearance at sports events, be it soccer matches or basketball and handball tournaments. ًWearing the Palestinian keffiyeh, a classic display of symbolic solidarity, has also increased significantly and across age, gender and social divides. And as awareness of different kinds of resistance and solidarity has grown, a generation some thought was clueless about the Palestinian cause is now engaging in economic boycotts, asking before making any purchase, “is this their product, or ours?”

It is in these acts of symbolic solidarity that we Egyptians remind each other that the aggression against Palestine is ongoing, and that resistance, whatever form it takes, will therefore continue. Through material displays of solidarity, we are saying loud and clear: we won’t forget about Palestine, we will keep reminding each other, and our solidarity is plain for the world to see.

In “Palestinian Loneliness”, Gianluca Solera speaks of the silencing of Palestinians in their national struggle for liberation, and how their loneliness will eventually take a new form after the war on Gaza ends as they begin to deal with their colossal losses, he says, “Loneliness, Palestinian loneliness- I could not name it differently- will eventually mutate into something else when the war ends, and it will end, probably when the casualties reach a 30:1 ratio or when all buildings are razed to the ground. Loneliness then will bear the significance of a removal, dislodgment, a feeling of a nuisance for the rest of the world.”

Today’s Arab-Islamic summit on the situation in Gaza ended with a concluding statement of 31 clauses, none of which is binding or contains language on practical steps toward implementation.

Mada Masr spoke to government and security sources to understand the political disagreements that led to the fractured summit and how Egypt is continuing to pursue its own ends in dialogue with Qatar, Israel, the US and Hamas.

The role of the Armed Forces, said President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi during a televised address on Monday, is to protect Egypt’s borders and national security “without transgression,” warning against actions resulting from “anger, fervor,” and “illusions of power.”

Sisi’s comments came during a war readiness inspection organized as part of official ceremonies to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1973 October war.

Egypt is preparing field hospitals and triage facilities in North Sinai to treat patients wounded in Israel’s ongoing assault on the Gaza Strip, where the health system has collapsed with fuel supplies entirely depleted and continuous airstrikes, some of which have targeted hospitals and health facilities.

Access from Gaza to Egypt via the Rafah border crossing is still closed, however.
